Belém and the natural world: viewsof travelers about plants and animals in the amazon urban areas (1840-1860)

Abstract

Known tomany travelers during the first half of the nineteenth century, the city of Belem was not only a place to stay or gateway to conduct research and observations in the natural world of the Amazon. Many scholars, seduced by the fauna and flora of the internal environmentand the outskirts of the capital of Grão-Pará, also occupied themselves with describing aspects of the nature present in their urban core or in its vicinity. Keeping with this approach and believing that the social and urban spaces cannot be separated from the natural environment, this article reviewsthe experiences of some foreigners involved in the description of plants and animals in the city of Belém, Pará, Brazil.
