Landscapes and temporalities in Serra Leste de Carajás

Abstract

The article analyzes the landscape of Serra Leste de Carajás and the different periods of occupation in an integrated manner, since each moment leaves traces that comprise the landscape of this region. This study presents the context of 15 caverns containing vestiges of recent occupation, four of which also have preserved traces of remote indigenous occupations, together with open areas that served as campsites or dwelling sites prior to the arrival of the Portuguese and today are used for livestock ranching. As a result, today in Serra de Carajás it is possible to find evidence of occupations by hunter-gatherers, farming societies, and gold miners, among others. Drawing on the theoretical approaches of the landscape that interpret nature and culture in an integrative way over the long term, the article emphasizes that the landscape is a palimpsest with memories of different occupations, and that the layers of these occupations may eventually intersect.
