Between myth and history: the priest who was born Indian and the history of Oriximiná

Father José Nicolino de Sousa is renowned as the founder of the town of Oriximiná, in the state of Pará. Although he is admired as a civilizing priest, his native ancestry is almost never known or remembered. Based on 19th century documents such as newspaper reports, manuscripts and a diary written by the priest himself, this article analyses the historical events and recollections concerning José Nicolino de Sousa, contrasting the myths created about him with what historical sources reveal. One conclusion is that the settlement that became Oriximiná was established long before the founding journey attributed to the priest, and it is possible to create a more inclusive historical narrative about the region that includes the testimony of people who have been silent thus far.
