Abstract
The article analyzes the constitution of the museal field in Maranhão in the 19th and early 20th centuries, having as references the impacts of the Natural History Cabinet of the Maranhão Province (1844) and the Museum of the Maranhão History and Geography Institute (1925). These experiences demonstrate the existence of other museological pasts in Brazil and consist of examples of nomadic collections that dismembered to form museums and instituted a culture of the heritage in Maranhão. The sources mobilized by means of bibliographic and documentary research consisted of important evidencies that break with the zone of silence existing in the history of museums and contribute to enrich the narratives about the Brazilian museological panorama.
