Neoliberal urbanization and mega events in Lima and Callao

Abstract

This article examines the diffusion of a recent model of neoliberal urban governance that would manage neoliberal urbanization processes in the cities of Lima and Callao, considering the context of preparation to host the XVIII Pan American Games in Lima, in 2019. The article aims to show how mega events are used as spatial production instruments, through coalitions of charismatic private sector leaders and real estate interests, with the intention of transforming the city through the mobilization of patriotism and consensus. It is argued that the state promotes neoliberal urbanization through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).
