Training for midwives: should there be midwives or not?

This articles analyzes the training courses for midwives in Brazil in the 19th century. The documentation studied is extremely rich and raises important issues referring to midwives' training; the characteristics of the desired student, the frequency and number of classes; the role of doctors and midwives in attending births; and the still present professional dispute over gender and race relations.
