New trends or persistent inequalities? modernization and educational expansion in Brazil

ABSTRACT

The article aims to investigate patterns of association between social origins and educational destinations in primary, secondary and higher education, throughout the modernization of Brazilian society. The analysis is based on the research agenda on educational transition models and on the international comparative agenda derived from it. Results of the estimation of educational transition models are presented, using demographic census data from 1960 to 2010, and the main findings evidence different inequality parameters by educational level - relative decline in primary education conclusion, persistent inequalities in the completion of secondary education and increasing inequalities in higher education entrance.
