(Co)Extendable Affections in Urban “Peripheries”: (Homo)Sexualities, Friendships and Belongings

Abstract

This article examines the constitution of meanings of “family” and the idea of “community” among homosexuals in two bars located in “peripheral” regions of the cities of São Paulo and Belém (Brazil). Based on doctoral research in anthropology on socio-spatial disputes, mobilities and sociability, it is an effort to: 1) question situations that encourage exercises of belonging and reciprocity between owners and clients, to materialize the production of affective repertoires; and 2) explore the sense of “community” triggered through “informal” economies and a protective vision (a sense of sheltering and security). Therefore, I realized that the actioning of affective repertoires in the bars is a way to operate socio-spatial relationships guided by personhood, especially because these spaces do not function merely as vectors of consumption and fun. Moreover, they are perceived as (co)extendable spaces not restricted to physical limits, depending on the degree of proximity.
