El "familismo" y el "maternalismo" son criterios centrales de la atribución de legitimidad de la palabra pública en la Argentina post-dictatorial. Durante la dictadura (1976-1983), tanto los militares como el movimiento de derechos humanos utilizaron la matriz familiar para interpretar su lugar en la confrontación política. Las definiciones familísticas dominaron las organizaciones de derechos humanos ("Madres", "Abuelas", "Familiares", luego "Hijos" y "Herman@s"). A su vez, las pruebas de ADN para identificar niño/as secuestrado/as dieron a la genética un lugar privilegiado para expresar demandas basadas en la condición de "víctima". Esto plantea preguntas inquietantes sobre la relación entre estos criterios y la conformación de una noción amplia de igualdad ciudadana.

"Family-ism" and "maternalism" have been key notions in legitimizing certain forms of public speech in post-dictatorship Argentina. During the 1976-1983 dictatorship, the military, as well as the human rights movement, used rhetoric of the family to interpret their place in public confrontation. Family-related definitions dominated human rights organizations ("Mothers", "Grandmothers", "Relatives", and so "Sons" and "Siblings"). On the other hand, DNA tests to identify children who had been kidnapped gave genetics a privileged role in demands based on victimhood. This process poses perturbing questions about the relation between these criteria and the forging of a more ample notion of citizens’ equality.

Depois da publicação das cartas de Freud a Fliess a literatura psicanalítica começou a prestar atenção à babá de Freud e, por consequência, à importância da babá na família ideal dessa literatura. Incluída, na prática, nos modelos explicativos de análise da família burguesa desde o século dezenove, a babá, ainda demasiado presente nas famílias de classe média e alta no Brasil, foi excluída da teoria analítica e continua a por em questão o triângulo "papai-mamãe-filho".

The Freud-Fliess letters attracted attention to Freud’s nanny and also to the role played by nannies in the ideal family of psychoanalytic theory. Included in the models that explained the bourgeois family since the nineteenth century, but excluded by analytic theory, the nanny, ever present in Brazilian upper-class families, still poses a question to the ‘father-mother-infant’ triangle.

Na realização das tarefas de cuidado e manutenção das famílias de camadas médias no Brasil - desempenhada, na esmagadora maioria das vezes, por mulheres pobres, fora da parentela dos empregadores - assim como nas formas de remuneração e de relacionamento que se desenvolvem entre patrões e empregadas domésticas, reproduz-se um sistema altamente estratificado de gênero, classe e cor. A manutenção desse sistema hierárquico que o serviço doméstico desvela tem sido reforçada, em particular, por uma ambigüidade afetiva entre os empregadores - sobretudo as mulheres e as crianças - e as trabalhadoras domésticas. Ao analisar exemplos tirados de uma pesquisa etnográfica em Vitória (Espírito Santo), comentaremos como essa ambigüidade se revela como instrumento fundamental de uma didática da distância social.

In the execution of domestic tasks linked to the care and maintenance of middle-class families in Brazil - an activity performed, in most cases, by lower-income women who are not otherwise related to the employers - as well as in the forms of remuneration and relationships that develop between employers and maids, we witness the reproduction of a highly stratified system of gender, class, and color. The maintenance of the hierarchical system revealed by domestic service has been reinforced, in particular, by emotional ambiguities in the relationship between employers - especially women and children - and the domestic workers. By analyzing examples drawn from our ethnographic study in Vitória (Espírito Santo), we will comment on how this ambiguity emerges as a fundamental instrument in the didactics of social distance

Nesse artigo, inspiro-me em pesquisas realizadas na Suécia, Índia, Colômbia, Equador, Bolívia, Chile e Estados Unidos, entre 1995 e 2004, para enfocar o que Laurel Kendall descreve como "a plasticidade assim como a força do parentesco idiomático" no contexto da adoção transnacional. Tanto na Europa como na América do Norte, adoções transnacionais (que tendem a ser transraciais, dado que a maioria das crianças adotadas vem de regiões não-européias) complicam o projeto de "imitar a natureza", pois em muitas dessas adoções a "diferença" entre os pais adotivos e a criança é evidente. O adotado oriundo da Ásia, da África ou da América Latina que vive numa família euro-americana representa um paradoxo de pertencimento no contexto global onde o transnacionalismo, ao mesmo tempo, afirma e transgride as fronteiras da nação-estado.

In this article, I draw on research carried out in Sweden, India, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, and the United States between 1995-2004 to focus on what Laurel Kendall describes as "the plasticity as well as the power of idiomatic kinship" in the context of transnational adoption. In both Europe and North America, transnational adoptions (which have tended to be cross-racial, in the sense that the majority of adopted children come from non-European regions of the globe) complicate the project of "imitating nature", since in many of these adoptions, the "difference" between adopted child and parent is obvious. The adoptee from Asia, Africa, or Latin America in an Euro-American home represents the ultimate paradox of belonging in a global context where transnationalism both affirms and breaches the borders of the nation-state.

Levando em conta a perspectiva histórica, examino, neste artigo, a relação entre uma nora e uma sogra hindu numa rede migratória que envolve Diu - Índia, Moçambique, Portugal e Inglaterra. Esta reflexão faz parte de uma pesquisa sobre a família hindu em Moçambique, estabelecendo um diálogo crítico com estudos que analisam a família hindu como o lugar de reserva das marcas identitárias das populações às quais se atribui origem indiana em África. Inspirada na literatura antropológica, que enfatiza a relação entre os sistemas de relação e o tempo, procuro destacar a flexibilidade das hierarquias das quais participam as mulheres casadas indianas no contexto contemporâneo de Moçambique.

Taking into account the historical perspective, I examine in this article the relation between a Hindu mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law within a migration network involving Diu (India), Mozambique, Portugal and England. My reflections are part of a research project on Hindu families in Mozambique, aimed at establishing a critical dialogue with those studies that see the Hindu family in Africa as a stronghold of identity for populations thought of as originally Indian. Inspired in the anthropological literature that emphasizes the time dimension of relational systems, I seek to underline, in the context of contemporary Mozambique, the flexibility of hierarchies in which married Indian women participate.

Desemprego, divórcio, viuvez, filhos que não saem nunca da casa dos pais são as razões que explicam porque, no Brasil, as gerações mais velhas coabitam cada vez mais com as mais jovens. Retornar para a casa familiar, ou ir morar na casa de um(a) filho(a) introduz uma nova dinâmica na organização doméstica: a reorganização do espaço - abrir, criar lugares para receber o novo(s) membro(s); a adaptação das regras, horários e tarefas às necessidades e atividades de cada um, e do grupo em particular. Morar com três ou quatro gerações implica em uma contribuição material e financeira, mas, também, em um suporte moral e afetivo no apoio logístico do cotidiano doméstico. A vida em comum só é possível se existir este circuito de reciprocidades, senão a coabitação pode quebrar a harmonia familiar e tornar-se violenta.

Unemployment, divorce, widowhood, children who never leave their parents' house, these are the reasons that explain why the older generations in Brazil cohabit with the younger generations more than before. Returning to one’s parents’ house, or moving to the children's house introduces a new dynamic into the domestic organization: the reorganization of space - the creation of places to receive new family members; the adaptation of rules, schedules and tasks, to the necessities and activities of each member and to the group's in particular. Living with three or four generations implies a material contribution as well as emotional and moral support for the logistics of daily domestic life. Living together is only possible when there is a circuit of reciprocities; otherwise, cohabitation can provoke violent rupture in the family’s harmony.

Nos parágrafos a seguir, para refletir sobre temas como a "identidade palestina" ou "a família árabe", tentarei demonstrar, a partir do estudo etnográfico de famílias morando em Chuí, o quanto a identidade territorial tem a ver com aspectos da vida familiar. Entre viagens de retorno (que introduzem jovens "brasileiros" no convívio com primos, tios e tias na Palestina), relações familiares (na diáspora, vínculos travados na cidade de Chuí e outras localidades no Brasil e no exterior), e acontecimentos internacionais recentes -- não será uma única explicação que dará a entender a recriação e a pertinência de uma identidade social calcada no reconhecimento de uma origem e um destino comum.

In the following paragraphs, to investigate themes such as "Palestinian identity" or "the Arab family", and drawing on an ethnographic study of families living in Chui, I intend to demonstrate the extent to which territorial identity is intermingled with aspects of family life. Between "return trips" (that introduce young Brazilians to the daily life of cousins, aunts and uncles in Palestine), family relations (in the diaspora, relations forged in the city of Chui and other places in Brazil and abroad), and recent international events - there is no single element that can explain the re-creation and the relevance of a social identity based on the recognition of a common origin and destiny.

Este artículo, basado en el trabajo de campo realizado en áreas rurales del Alto Valle de Río Negro, Argentina, desde el año 1999, tiene como propósito presentar las relaciones en las cuales se insertan hombres y mujeres chilenas que residen y trabajan en "chacras" destinadas a la producción frutícola. Las diferentes actividades en las chacras se organizan según el sexo y la edad, definiéndose una segmentación del mercado de trabajo en la que se ven involucrados los diferentes miembros de la familia. Como desarrollaré, ser trabajadores chilenos en la fruticultura del Alto Valle de Río Negro reproduce una identidad étnica y nacional en el seno de la cotidianeidad familiar y laboral.

This article, based on field work conducted in rural areas of the Alto Valle de Río Negro, Argentina, from 1999 on, analyzes the relations in which Chilean men and women who reside and work in small farms destined to fruit production are inserted. The different activities in the small farms are organized according to sex and age, circumscribing a segment of the labor market in which different members of the family are involved. As I will demonstrate, to be a Chilean worker in the fruit growing region of the Alto Valle is to reproduce an ethnic and national identity through work routines mediated by family relations.

Through the comparison of social connections and interactions between France and West Africa and the use of telecommunications by migrants arriving in France at differing periods between 1965 and 2005, this article demonstrates the significance of these communication technologies in (re)defining social distance and facilitating the continued involvement of migrants in family decision making in the original communities.

Os temas centrais desse artigo, reunificação familiar em geral e teste de DNA em particular, surgiram a partir de uma pesquisa em andamento acerca de jovens da Somália na Finlândia. Desde 1996, realizo uma pesquisa etnográfica - em escolas, clubes de jovens, ruas e cafés - com jovens da Somália que chegaram à Finlândia por volta de 1994 e que freqüentam escolas finlandesas nos subúrbios de Helsinki. Meu interesse geral nesta pesquisa longitudinal era conhecer as experiências de passagem para a vida adulta em contextos altamente diferenciados, não apenas do ponto de vista do país anfitrião, mas também cultural e transnacionalmente. O tema, testes de DNA, toca na questão central desta pesquisa de modo profundo. Aqui, crescer não é visto como uma simples questão biológica. É um processo social no qual as relações, como laços de parentesco, são constituídas, vivenciadas e contestadas. Essas relações são poderosas para a identificação individual e social. A testagem-DNA pode violar simbólica e fisicamente o processo social de identificações íntimas e de integridade pessoal.

The central themes of this article, family reunification in general, and DNA testing in particular, came to the fore during a research project about young Somalians in Finland. Since 1996, I have been conducting ethnographic research - in schools, youth clubs, streets and cafés - with youngsters from Somalia who arrived in Finland around 1994, and who attend Finnish schools in the suburbs of Helsinki. My general interest in this longitudinal study was to learn about the experiences of coming of age in highly dispersed settings, not only in the vein of a local host country, but also culturally and transnationally. Here, growing up is seen not as a simple biological question. It is a social process in which relationships such as kinship ties are constituted, experienced, and contested. These are powerful relations for individual and social identifications. DNA-testing may both symbolically and physically violate this social process of intimate identifications and personal integrity.

Os modelos conciliatórios de solução de conflitos têm ganhado uma importância cada vez maior nas propostas interessadas em dar celeridade ao Judiciário e ampliar o acesso da população à justiça. Esse artigo propõe uma reflexão sobre esse modelo, pautado no acordo e na conciliação, quando está em jogo a violência doméstica. Tomando como base estudos etnográficos sobre a Delegacia de Defesa da Mulher e os Juizados Especiais Criminais, o argumento central é que a conciliação ganha conteúdos muito distintos nessas duas instâncias do sistema de justiça. O contraste entre valores e simbologias postas em ação no fluxo dos processos nessas duas instâncias oferece elementos para a compreensão do contexto que levou à promulgação da Lei Maria da Penha, sancionada no dia 7 de agosto 2006, que retirou do âmbito dos Juizados Especiais Criminais os delitos que envolvem violência doméstica e familiar contra a mulher.

Alternative conflict resolution based on forms of conciliation have been identified as a possible response to problems of access to courts deriving from the numbers, costs and length of proceedings in the Brazilian’s judicial system. This paper focuses on these alternative forms of justice, regarding domestic violence matters. Using ethnographic methods of studies at Women’s Police Stations and at Small Claim Courts, the main argument is that the forms of conciliation can be very different, specifically, in these two institutions of the judicial system. The contrasts between moral values and the simbols used differently by these two institutions offer some elements for us to understand the context in which was created the Law called Maria da Penha, sanctioned on August 17th of 2006. After this Law, cases of domestic violence against women were excluded from Small Claim Courts in Brazil.

Este artigo problematiza alguns processos de produção e veiculação de representações de maternidade, tomando como referência o Programa Nacional Bolsa-Escola, e insere-se no campo da teorização cultural, principalmente na perspectiva dos Estudos Culturais e dos Estudos Feministas, nas vertentes que têm proposto uma aproximação crítica com a análise pós-estruturalista. Para a operacionalização do trabalho, selecionei um conjunto de anúncios televisivos que divulgaram o Programa à população no primeiro ano de sua implantação. Exploro os anúncios com o intuito de analisar os diferentes modos de representar e significar a maternidade. Discuto como se organiza e divulga, no âmbito do Programa, um conjunto de ensinamentos e propostas a serem desenvolvidas, principalmente na família, a fim de buscar (re)colocar, sobretudo, as mulheres-mães e a educação das crianças no centro desses debates.

This work discusses and questions some processes of production and propagation of maternity representations, having the National Bolsa-Escola Program as its starting point, and localized in the field of cultural theory, mainly from the perspectives of both Cultural Studies and Feminist Studies, with a critical approximation to the post-structuralist analysis. In order to carry out the work, I have selected a series of television advertisements used to publicize the Program in its first year of implementation. I have explored these advertisements in order to analyze the different ways through which maternity has been represented and meant. I have discussed how a set of teachings and proposals was publicized in the Program so as to be mainly developed by the families, thus relocating women/mothers and children’s education into the center of those debates.

Em quatro escolas superiores de agricultura estudadas o percentual de mulheres no corpo discente ou no corpo docente é estatisticamente desprezível nas décadas de 1930 e 1940. Apesar disso, do ponto de vista dos estudos de gênero e da história das ciências, é importante compreender essa presença para entender e reconhecer o papel das mulheres na sociedade e em particular no meio científico. Nosso propósito não foi o de realizar um balanço aprofundado sobre a carreira seguida pelas engenheiras agrônomas. Outrossim, reunimos o que falavam sobre elas as poesias, os ofícios, algumas fotos e figuras, relacionando essas representações ao processo de institucionalização das ciências agrícolas no Brasil no período.

Our research on the historical trajectory of four Brazilian agricultural schools in the thirties and forties of the twentieth century does not show a significant number of women in the profession. Nevertheless, rethinking these data, inspired by the history of science and gender studies, it is possible to understand the meanings, and the role played of those women within society, and in the scientific milieu. We collected and analyzed speeches, poetry, official documents, images, and photos, which led to a reflection on these representations, as well as the process of institutionalization of agricultural science.

Este artigo discute as relações de gênero na década de cinqüenta, através de um diálogo entre os apontamentos dos estudos historiográficos e as representações de gênero em cinco contos do escritor Nelson Rodrigues, publicados na coluna "A vida como ela é..." (1951-1961). Ao relacionar as imagens de homem, de mulher, do casamento e do amor existentes nos discursos presentes na sociedade e no imaginário social e as imagens produzidas pela ficção, busco entender o caráter e o papel das histórias de Nelson Rodrigues diante dos conflitos que envolviam as relações amorosas naquele período.

This paper discusses gender relations in the fifties, through a dialogue between the notes of studies of history and gender representations in Nelson Rodrigues’s five stories, published in the column A vida como ela é... [Life as it is…] (1951-1961). It intended to relate man’s and woman’s images, as well as that of marriage and of love present in the discourses in society and in the social imaginary and images produced by fiction, aiming at understanding their character and their role in the conflicts that involved love relationships.

A despeito do movimento histórico de padronização do comportamento feminino circunscrito ao espaço doméstico, levado a cabo em meados do século XIX, alguns esforços no sentido de promoção do desenvolvimento das potencialidades da mulher, dentro e fora do âmbito familiar, podem ser detectados na imprensa da época. Neste artigo descrevemos o posicionamento do semanário O Sexo Feminino (1873-74), da cidade de Campanha, Minas Gerais, frente ao papel da mulher nas questões políticas, culturais e educacionais, e analisamos algumas de suas estratégias discursivas.

Despite the 19th century historical tendency to restrict women’s life to the domestic sphere, some efforts for the empowerment of women could be seen in the press of the period. In this paper we focus on the weekly newspaper O Sexo Feminino, published in Campanha (a rural village of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais) during 1873-74 and we analyse its discourse concerning the feminist perspective on political, cultural and educational issues.
