Active search for individuals with respiratory symptoms as part of community health workers' role in tuberculosis control

This study aims at analyzing the incorporation of the active search for respiratory symptoms for Tuberculosis Control at a Municipal Health District in Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil, according to the perception of nursing supervisors in the Community Health Agent Program (CHAP). The population studied was of 8 nurses. Authors used semi-structured interviews as a data collection instrument. Data were analyzed by means of the thematic content analysis technique and resulted in two thematic units: 1) the insertion of CHAP in health units and its weak points and 2) Relationship between the CHAP and the Health Units regarding actions for Tuberculosis control. The weak points were related to the process of CHAP organization: absence of discussion about inserting the CHAs into the health team, absence of CHAP leadership or coordination in the municipal sphere, nursing supervisor's accumulation of functions, insufficient agent training process. With respect to incorporate tuberculosis control actions, especially the active search for respiratory symptoms, they point out that the decentralization should results in benefits for users. However, it is necessary to rethink the organization of health services and assume a set of actions to move towards a new work logic.
