Uptake and the Emergence of Academic Genres: the PROFLETRAS’ master thesis

ABSTRACT

The relationship between genres within activity systems is a premise of rhetorical and sociological-based genre theory. In this paper, under the Rhetorical Genre Studies guidelines, we draw on the concept of uptake to investigate the PROFLETRAS’s Master Thesis in its relationship with antecedent genres. With the aim of exploring the process of uptake involved in the writing of the TCF, the study examines both the structural organization of the first TCF produced in the Program, in the light of antecedent genres such as the academic master’s thesis and institutional guidelines that framed their production, and the students’ perception of the challenge of writing in the genre. The results suggest the emergence of a new academic genre associated with, but not identical to, the traditional master’s thesis.
