Henri Lefebvre on space science: unfolding his spatial genealogy

Abstract

Although many papers discuss Lefebvre’s propositions on topics such as modernity, capitalism, and urban revolution, few of them make the effort to clarify many of his ideas that seem confusing, among which the one that matters most to theoretical and empirical studies in geography and social sciences - the conception of space. Starting from significant works by Lefebvre, this paper aims to shed light on the spatial genealogy proposed by him and which constitutes the core of his space science. Indeed, we emphasize that the Lefebvrian social space is more than a collection or system of objects and subjects, but a multiple and dynamic space, in constant transformations, juxtapositions, developments and contradictions.
