Theosodius, The Construction of an Exemplary Life and Death

Abstract

The present work on the figure of Theodosius does not pretend to be a historiographic study on the life and work of the emperor. We try to establish a series of propagandistic elements that served for the Hispanic emperor to be considered one of the great emperors of the Late Ancient world, and an example of Christian sovereignty. Through the works of Temistius, Pacatus, Ambrose of Milan and Augustine of Hippo, we get to know some of the keys of the imperial propaganda. For this purpose, we have analyzed the main virtues and qualities of Theodosius through these works. We have tried to see those elements that remain in spite of the transition from pagan to Christian culture, but also those elements that are typical of Christianity.
