Monçoeiros or bandeirantes on the Tietê River? Visual representations in the Monumento às Monções (Monsoons Monument) and in the coat of arms of Porto Feliz

Abstract

The present article focuses on the representation of river trips in the Monumento às Monções (Monsoons Monument) and in the versions of the coat of arms of Porto Feliz, conceived in the early decades of the 20th century. The article analyzes the elements of such supports as visual and material dimensions of the construction project of the bandeirante myth, used as an instrument to legitimize the hegemony of São Paulo on Brazilian scene in that context, and developed at the Museu Paulista, through the decorative project and exhibitions initiated by Afonso d'Escragnolle Taunay, director of the institution from 1917 to 1945.
