With regard to housing needs, people with severe mental disorders in Brazil have two possibilities: therapeutic residential services or alternative forms of service such as family support and/or support from the mental health services, particularly from psychosocial support centers. It seems fundamental to evaluate how people with severe mental disorders establish their living space (habitus) and their social integration during these experiences, starting from the structural elements of housing (shelter, privacy, safety and comfort) and the support elements (social network and health services), along with the follow-up provided by health services, within a context of deinstitutionalization. For this, some principles, analysis categories and possible contributions for a qualitative and interdisciplinary evaluative investigation method are discussed. This method was developed by researchers from different knowledge areas (anthropology, architecture, psychoanalysis and public health), in order to provide a more systematic approach towards this important topic.
