LONG-DISTANCE AND INTENSIVE TEACHING AT CEVAP

The Center for the Study of Venoms and Venomous Animals - CEVAP-UNESP has always been concerned with the teaching of Toxinology. Thus, in 1994, CEVAP's members launched a book named Venenos animais: uma visão integrada. This book has a multidisciplinary approach, including subjects related to medical, veterinary, pharmaceutical and biological aspects. In 1995, CEVAP's members published the first Brazilian electronic Journal entirely dedicated to Toxinology, entitled The Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins. Nowadays, this Journal is indexed in Brazilian and International databases such as LILACS, Chemical Abstracts Service, Excerpta Medica - EMBASE, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and CAB International. Since 1996, CEVAP, sponsored by UNIMED do Brasil and TBR, is preparing the first Video Library on Toxinology. Nineteen video classes dealing with microorganism toxins (tetanus, diphtheria, cholera and toxic-shock syndrome caused by Staphylococcus aureus), plant toxins (medical and veterinary aspects) and animal toxins (snakes, amphibians, scorpions, spiders, bees, wasps, caterpillars) are being filmed. This video library will be distributed, free of charge, to all Brazilian Medical Schools. In 1997, CEVAP's members started to work on the Virtual Center on Toxinology which is available in the World Wide Web. The Virtual Center presents multiple aspects related to Toxinology, including the Abstracts of The Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins. With the objective of speeding up information, all abstracts of manuscripts to be published in the Journal will be available in the Internet right after their acceptance. So, anyone can visit our home-page and see the future publications. In addition, we have included links to the International Society on Toxinology, Sites for Brazilian Institutes and information on Medical Emergency. Upon visiting sections of Medical Emergency, any professional interested in human envenoming can learn more about animals, clinical conditions and medical treatment. Welcome to our Virtual World at http://www.botunet.com.br/cevap.

In 1997, CEVAP's members started their first experience of Intensive Teaching - the First International Specialization Course on Toxinology was offered. It was a three-month course attended by students from Zimbabwe, Colombia, Bolivia and Brazil. CEVAP will offer the International Specialization Course on Toxinology every two years.
