The European debate on the crisis of the "labour-based society" is examined. The advanced capitalist countries are no longer able (or need not anymore) provide jobs for all their citizens wishing to work. This is in stark contrast with the fact that paid work remains, not only as the most fundamental way of obtaining social citizenship, but also as the source of some of the core values and objectives of individual life.
