Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and the words: a polemic

The importance of words in the work of historians and social scientists is discussed. On the basis of a polemic involving Brazilian historians in the seventies, the issue of signification is reviewed in an attempt to understand the reconstruction and interpretation of meaning when dealing with historical documents. The discussion focuses on the role of the reader and on the tense relationship between the text of the historian and the original sources.
