Despite the disappointing results of the UNCED regarding the definition of funding mechanisms for global environmental policies, the author sees as an outcome of the Riol92 Conference the emergence of a new orientation to environmentalist movements, based on a communicative ethics from which a balanced consideration of both the realist and the idealist principles in international relations can be expected
