Vertentes filosóficas, políticas ou estéticas que contestaram os paradigmas centrais da modernidade são tradicionalmente percebidas como externas à própria modernidade. Este texto fala sobre aquilo que a própria ideologia modernizante denuncia como um irracionalismo antimoderno que, todavia, acompanha esta modernidade desde seus primórdios e recebe dela, paradoxalmente, impulsos aceleradores. Apresentar o romantismo, a mística e a escatologia como acompanhantes da modernidade técnica significa, também, entendê-los como fenômenos históricos que não entregaram as alternativas imaginárias ao mito da máquina; mito evocado por uma modernidade que quer esquecer as dimensões do Ser e da existência humana que transbordam o fatual e o mundo manipulável.

Philosophical, political or esthetic visions which have contested central paradigms of modernity are traditionally seen as external to modernity itself. This text talks about what modernizing ideology denounces as an antimodern irrationalism which, however, has followed this modernity since its beginning and receives from it, paradoxically, accelerating impulses. Presenting Romanticism, Mystique and Eschatology as companions of technical modernity also means to understand them as historical phenomena which have not handed over the imaginary alternatives to the machine myth, the one constructed by a modernity that wants to forget the dimensions of being and human existence which overflow the factual and the world exposed to manipulation.

Este artigo discute duas grandes concepções de literatura de testemunho. Uma delas desenvolve-se no âmbito dos estudos sobre a literatura latino-americana; outra é dominante no campo da reflexão sobre a shoah, termo amplamente utilizado para substituir a palavra holocausto. Ambas entendem ser a mimesis a natureza da literatura; no entanto, desenvolvem indagações bastante diversas sobre as possibilidades de a palavra representar a realidade, formulando, no limite, hipóteses antagônicas de interpretação da produção literária que tem sido designada pelo conceito de testemunho. Porém, aparte esse antagonismo, nos últimos anos a expressão tem remetido sempre a uma relação entre literatura e violência.

Abstract in English:

This article discusses two great conceptions about literature of testimony. One of them grows up from the Latin American literature; the other, from the thought on shoah, a largely employed word for holocaust. Both see mimesis as the essence of literature, but have different understandings about whether literature can represent reality - they even elaborate antagonic interpretative hypothesis about the literary production related to the concept of testimony. Despite that antagonism, at late the concept has always addressed to the relation between literature and violence.

Este artigo examina aspectos da história semântica do conceito de Spanish America nos Estados Unidos do século XIX. A análise de discursos e textos de políticos, funcionários de governo, jornalistas e intelectuais americanos indica a tendência de se imputar a Spanish America e seus habitantes características opostas àquelas atribuídas à auto-imagem coletiva americana. Ademais, nota-se que essas qualidades negativas se aglutinam em torno de três "regiões" semânticas": cultural, temporal e racial. O texto dá conta de como e quando essas "regiões" semânticas surgiram e das ações projetadas ou justificadas por sua articulação.

This article examines aspects of the semantic history of Spanish America in nineteenth-century United States. The analysis of speeches and texts by American politicians, government officials, journalists and intellectuals suggests a tendency to give Spanish America and its habitants some traces opposite to the ones done to the American collective self-image. Those negative qualities cover three "semantic regions": culture, time and race. The article exposes how and when those "regions" have risen and the actions projected from and justified for their articulation.

O artigo apresenta a reflexão de Norberto Bobbio sobre os intelectuais. Argumenta que a sua formulação do exercício do poder ideológico como atributo desses atores sociais segue quatro premissas associadas. A primeira diz respeito às conseqüências sociais dos diferentes legados do passado e da diversidade das estruturas sociais sobre a atuação possível dos intelectuais em cada sociedade. A segunda às relações entre cultura e política como eixo da análise dos intelectuais. A terceira à possibilidade de se forjar tipologias de intelectuais operativas da análise. E por último a questão da responsabilidade dos intelectuais - central na reflexão do autor. Após mostrar cada uma dessas premissas, procura-se recuperar a contribuição teórica de Bobbio para a análise dos intelectuais na sociedade brasileira.

The article presents the reflection of Norberto Bobbio on intellectuals. Bobbio's formulation of the exercise of the ideological power as an attribute of these social actors follows four associated premises. The first refers to the social consequences of the different legacies of the past and the diversity of the social structures on the possible performance of the intellectuals. The second refers to the relationships between culture and politics as the axis of the analysis of the intellectuals. The third points to the possibility of constructing typologies of intellectuals. Finally, the question of the responsibility of the intellectuals, one of Bobbio's central concerns. After presenting these premises, the article extends the theoretical contribution of Bobbio to the analysis of the intellectuals in the Brazilian society.

O ponto de partida do artigo é a biografia de Trotski por Pierre Broué, mas o texto pretende ser mais do que uma resenha do livro. Depois de resumir a trajetória de Trotski, insistindo sobre o seu momento mais democratizante (Nossas Tarefas Políticas, 1904), e sobre alguns momentos em que aparecem os lados mais autoritários (recusa de alianças em outubro de 1917, militarização do trabalho etc), o texto analisa principalmenbte dois problemas, relacionados com o destino de Trotski: o da tensão entre democracia interna de partido e ditadura externa e, num plano mais geral, o da natureza do regime russo sob Lenin e depois sob Stalin. O ponto de chegada é a questão das relações entre marxismo, leninismo e stalinismo.

The starting point of the present article is Trotsky's biography by Pierre Broué, but it intends to be more than a mere review of the book. Following Trotsky's life story, it insists specially on the most democratic moments of his political life (Our Political Tasks, 1904) and on the most authoritarian ones (the rejection of all political alliances in October 1917, the militarisation of labor etc). After that, the text analyses closely two problems related to Trotsky's fate: the problem of the tension between the internal democracy within the party and the external dictatorship, and, on a more general level, the problem of the nature of the political system under Lenin, and afterwards, under Stalin. Finally, it discusses the question of the relation between Marxism, Leninism and Stalinism.

O Estado social-democrata nas democracias avançadas está gradativamente se transformando em Estado republicano. A onda neoliberal fracassou porque as sociedades modernas precisam de um Estado forte, e não fraco. Um Estado é republicano quando é suficientemente forte para proteger o patrimônio público da captura privada. O Estado republicano que está surgindo é forte sob o aspecto fiscal porque limita sua dívida, é forte administrativamente porque está engajado na reforma da gestão pública, e é forte politicamente porque cidadãos, políticos e funcionários públicos sabem que os princípios que regem a política não são os mesmos que regem os mercados. Uma breve resenha da literatura sobre o republicanismo é elaborada para substanciar essas afirmações.

The social-democratic state existing in advanced democracies is gradually changing into a republican state. The neo-liberal wave failed because modern societies need a strong, not a weak state. A republican state is strong enough to protect the public patrimony from private capture. The republican state that is emerging is fiscally strong because it limits its debts, it is administratively strong because it is engaged in public management reform, and it is politically strong because citizens, politicians and civil servants know that the principles ruling politics are not the same that rule markets. A short survey of the literature on republicanism is undertaken to substantiate these claims.
