On December 7th and 8th, 2020, the postgraduate multicampus program in Materials Science and Technology – POSMAT, from the São Paulo State University – UNESP, held its 1st Virtual Technical Meeting, an event that has been a continuation of the four Technical Meetings previously held by POSMAT, being the 3 first in Bauru and the 4th in Sorocaba. The purpose of this meeting held virtually was the interaction of students, researchers and professors from all campuses covered by the program, for the exhibition of works in progress, aiming to improve the development of these works and research, as well as the exchange of experiences and knowledge among the participants. This technical meeting showed the work under development in the programs and relevant selected talks were presented at the meeting as follows: Nanotechnologies and the potential for the development of sustainable agriculture, by Leonardo F. Fraceto, Institute of Science and Technology of Sorocaba - UNESP-POSMAT; GHz acoustic control of semiconductor nanostructures, by Paulo V. Santos, Paul Drude Institute , Berlin, Germany; Impact as an assessment dimension of Brazilian Graduate Program, by Antônio E. Martinelli , UFRN and Materials area coordinator-CAPES; Polymers and the never ending name game, by Roger Hiorns, Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour, France. These talks discussed the scientific tendency in the area of Materials, sustainability issues and as well as the future as Post-graduation area in the CAPES agency. We are sure that the technical meeting represented a great advance concerning research quality developed at UNESP Materials programs, with presentation of high-level works, and besides, opened possibilities of international exchange.

155 papers were presented at the event, whose abstracts were published (https://www.even3.com.br/anais/rtvposmat/) by master's and PhD students in the various research areas of the program: Materials Science, Chemistry of Materials, Biomaterials and Materials Modeling and Simulation. Students working in these areas of research are trained in several areas of knowledge, among them we may highlight: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Engineering and others.

Many of the contributions were of complete works and from these, about 40 papers were submitted to this POSMAT special section of Material Research, from which, after a rigorous peer review process, 24 were accepted and take part of this section.

On behalf of the organizing committee of the 1st Virtual Technical Meeting we would like to express our gratitude to UNESP and to the agencies that made that workshop and this special section possible, particularly to Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) – Finance Code 001. Also, we would like to thank the opportunity provided by Material Research journal to accept publish this special section.
