Ornamental Horticulture is moving forwardThe Ornamental Horticulture journal (ISSN: 2447-536X) celebrates nearly three decades of existence, continuously publishing scientific articles resulting from research conducted both in Brazil and abroad. Founded in 1995 by the Brazilian Society for Floriculture and Ornamental Plants, the journal has always been dedicated to disseminating high-quality science and technology (Graziano, 1995; Dias and Paiva, 2015a). Over this period, it has undergone various transformations, adapting to the needs of the community and providing information quickly and efficiently (Dias and Paiva, 2015b).
Throughout its history, the journal has had editors-in-chief who significantly contributed to its development: Thais Tostes Graziano (1995-2003), Antonio Fernando Caetano Tombolato (in memoriam) (2004-2009), Gláucia Moraes Dias (2010-2018) and Márkilla Zunete Beckmann-Cavalcante (2019-March). In 2024, Fernanda Carlota Nery and Patrícia Duarte de Oliveira Paiva took on the role of editors-in-chief working with the entire editorial team to build a cohesive journal with notable prominence in the scientific community.
The journal, initially known as Revista Brasileira de Horticultura Ornamental, took a significant step in 2005 by adopting online submission and publication, transitioning from a print version to a digital format (CD). In 2013, it began its process of internationalization, aiming for broader coverage and a global audience. By 2015, the journal was renamed Ornamental Horticulture and fully transitioned to an online format with digital submission and publication. From 2015 until the end of 2023, it published four annual issues, significantly increasing the number of available articles.
Indexing in databases became crucial with the growth of scientific production. In 2017, the journal was indexed in Scopus and SciELO, and in 2018, it was included in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). It is also indexed in other sources such as CABI and DOAJ. In 2019, the journal adopted the exclusive submission and publication of articles in English, marking a significant advancement in its internationalization. In 2023, the journal was added to the Web of Science database and received its first impact factor of 0.7 in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR).
All these advancements come with responsibilities and actions to ensure sustainability. The journal did not charge any fees initially; however, starting in 2021, it became necessary to introduce a publication fee. This measure was crucial for covering operational costs and maintaining the quality of services, allowing the journal to continue promoting and disseminating high-quality research in the field of ornamental horticulture.
Among other important strategies, in 2023, the journal established the role of Junior Editor to provide PhD and post-doctoral students with a comprehensive understanding of scientific publishing. This role has facilitated the adoption of new processes and dissemination strategies. Junior Editors work closely with the Editor-in-Chief, assist in organizing the journal’s internal workflows, and participate in specific training to understand all stages of the editorial and scientific publishing process. Additionally, they promote the journal’s content on social media, increasing its visibility and contributing to its innovation.
In 2024, the journal adopted the Continuous Publication model, aligning with global practices and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) requirements. This model, used by many leading international journals, allows for the publication of individual articles without waiting for a complete issue to be compiled, thus promoting efficiency in the communication and dissemination of research. Ornamental Horticulture meets the criteria and procedures set by SciELO for inclusion and maintenance in the SciELO Brazil Collection (SciELO, 2023).
Ornamental Horticulture is a leading journal in its field, dedicated to disseminating knowledge about flowers and ornamental plants. Committed to open and free access, the journal publishes original research on floriculture, ornamental plant, arboriculture, landscaping, and technological innovations with a translational focus. This trajectory establishes the journal as a vital scientific publication and solidifies its position as the only journal dedicated to this field in Latin America. The journal is available online on its official website (https://ornamentalhorticulture.com.br) and on SciELO (https://www.scielo.br/j/oh/). It is also present on social media platforms, including Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/people/Ornamental-Horticulture/), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/ornamental.horticulture), Twitter (now, X), and LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/ornamentalhorticulture/), upholding principles of ethics, inclusion, diversity, social relevance, transparency, and open access.
Future Perspectives
Several strategies are being implemented to maintain both national and international quality standards. Ornamental Horticulture adheres to the F.A.I.R. principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), ensuring that data is well-managed and open for editors in the field.
The SciELO Program has updated its priorities for the next five years (2024-2028) to advance open science communication. The goal is for all journals in the SciELO Network’s national collections to align with open science practices by the end of 2025 (SciELO, 2024). These guidelines focus on professionalization, internationalization, and operational and financial sustainability, which are essential for the future of Ornamental Horticulture. Implementing these guidelines aims to modernize editorial management and ensure global presence and economic viability, aligning with the best practices in scientific communication.
With these objectives, Ornamental Horticulture secures its prominent position in scientific communication, promoting the dissemination of knowledge and continuous advancement in the field of ornamental horticulture.
