This article presents a comparative regional overview of political parties and electoral campaigns financing systems of eighteen countries in Latin America. It presents also a evaluation of the major findings and currents trends on this subject and their effects on parties and on the democratic system, positing at the same time a set of guiding principles, overall objectives and (not prescriptive) recommendations that should be take into account in every electoral reform process.
