The management of development: the anpad’s perceptions and perspectives

Abstract

The discussion of the Management of development have been the focus of debate for a number of decades, if one takes into account the inaugural speech of the USA Prime Minister, Harry Truman, in 1949, when he has used this expression for giving notice of a world’s new era – the era of development. After some decades, it is clear, today, that there is an effort, from researchers within the Critical Studies of Administration (CSA) and the Critical Studies in Development (CSD), in shedding the light back to the issues inherent to development, more particularly in what regards the management of the process. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to understand the state-of-the-art of the Brazilian scientific community, taking into consideration the National Association of Post-graduation Programs in Management (ANPAD), in terms of their thoughts of the discipline of Management of Development. In order to meet this aim, an exploratory research was conducted with the participants of the XXXV Meeting of the National Association of Post-graduation Programs in Management (EnANPAD), which took place in Rio de Janeiro, in 2011. Descriptive statistics have supported our conclusions that the Management of Development is a fragmented discipline, which survives based on knowledge where the development phenomenon is subject of analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to provide an epistemological perspective over the issue of development, of the scientific community.
