Burnout Syndrome and social support at work: the perception of the nursing professionals at public and private hospitals

This study investigated nurses' perceptions of the influence of social support for Burnout syndrome. A survey of 231 nursing staff at four public and private hospitals in the central part of the Rio Grande do Sul was carried out. The results reveal that nurses suffer moderately from the syndrome and those at public hospitals suffered more and had less support at work when compared to those working at private hospitals. Moreover, using multiple regression, in the public sector the model of Emotional Exhaustion was foreseen by the informational social support and confidence factors, in 31% explained variance. In the private sector, the personal accomplishment dimension, was explained in 23% by the factors informational social support, confidence and clarity and agility of the information, showing the influence of social support at work for the Burnout Syndrome.
