A phylogeny of Carrerapyrgota Aczél (Diptera, Pyrgotidae) Cordeiro, Maria Leidiane Alves Mello, Ramon Luciano

Abstract CarrerapyrgotaAczél, 1956 is a Neotropical Diptera genus within Pyrgotidae. Currently, the genus comprise four species: C. miliariaAczél, 1956 (type species), C. personata (Lutz & Lima, 1918), C. aczeliMello, Lamas & Rafael, 2010, and C. bernardiiMello, Lamas & Rafael, 2010. This study investigates the phylogenetic relationships among Carrerapyrgota species, aiming to establish their monophyly as a genus. To achieve this, we conducted phylogenetic analyses based on 22 external morphological characters of adults, emploing the principle of parsimony. Analyses using both equal and implied character weighting support the monophyly of the genus, based on the following apomorphies: absence of the postscutellum, R2+3 with spurious apical vein, lower calypter with a longitudinal row of bristles, and the presence of a posterior longitudinal groove on the female fore femur. The species C. aczeli, C. bernardii, and C. miliaria form a monophyletic group, supported by the synapomorphic condition of a spot on the forehead. Within this group, C. bernardii and C. miliaria are sister species, sharing the synapomorphic condition of a less sclerotized M vein, after dm-cu compared to the anterior region, as well as the homoplastic condition of a spot on the median occipital sclerite. This phylogenetic analysis reaffirms the synonymy proposed by Bernardi (1990), which treats AnapyrgotaSteyskal, 1967, as a junior synonym of Carrerapyrgota. The evolutionary relationship among the species of the genus is represented as (C. personata (C. aczeli (C. bernardii, C. miliaria))). Furthermore, this study includes an updated distributional map for the genus, featuring the first record of Pyrgotinae in the Andean region.

Abstract The distribution of amphibians is conditioned by historical factors and ecological drivers. Thus, Ecological Niche Models are important tools to provide information on the potential distribution of the species and determine where they will be requirements in future. Mainly, rare species or with restricted areas of occurrence, because this information are essential to understanding of their living area, microhabitat use, or natural history, serving as a basis for preservation actions. Xenohyla eugenioi is a poorly known species, restricted to transition areas of Caatinga and Atlantic Forest from Minas Gerais to Sergipe. This species exhibits little biological information available and few specimens housed in museums, which difficulty to plan conservation strategies. Here our aim was modeling the current and future distribution and discussing about conservation of Xenohyla eugenioi. We searched for occurrence records through literature and scientific collections data. For the future (2071-2100), we used ensemble models from three algorithms (CTA, GLM and ANN) to two shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP370 and SSP585 scenarios). This species has approximately 650 km in straight line between the extreme localities, occurring mainly in bromeliads near to water bodies. The Ensemble method indicates the most suitable areas of occurrence were over ecotonal range between Caatinga and Atlantic Forest and our projections have showed suitable conditions to highlands (up to 1.000 m). However, in the future, is expected total erosion of the X. eugenioi populations, due climatic changes, which reinforce the caution to conservation of this poorly known species and necessity of studies about its ecology, natural history and distribution. Moreover, we hope that this work can contribute to the discovery of new records, characterizing the narrower niche space than this species may actually inhabit.

Abstract Selymbria amazonensissp. nov. is described and illustrated from Brazil. An illustrated taxonomic key for males and females is provided. We include distribution maps and comments on their morphology, geographical distribution, and life history.

A new species of Pinndorama Domahovski (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Hyalojassini) from the Amazon Rain Forest, Brazil Domahovski, Alexandre Cruz Gonçalves, Clayton Corrêa Takiya, Daniela Maeda

Abstract Pinndorama dilatatasp. nov. is described based on specimens from Amazonas State, Brazil. The genus is firstly recorded from the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Goiás, Maranhão, and São Paulo and a distribution map is provided, including new records to P. dianae, P. guartela, P. melanocephala, P. ronurensis, and P. pitanga. The key to males is updated to include the new species and minor improvements.

Insect galls of the Chapada Diamantina, Rio de Contas, Bahia, Brazil Araújo, Tainar de Jesus Maia, Valéria Cid Carneiro, Marco Antonio Alves Santos-Silva, Juliana

Abstract We surveyed insect galls and their host plants in areas of Caatinga and Cerrado in the municipality of Rio de Contas, in the extreme south of the Chapada Diamantina (Bahia state), between 703 and 1,897 m altitude, in order to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of local biodiversity. The survey was conducted in eight locations, adopting the random walking methodology for sampling, four in Caatinga and four in Cerrado, covering distinct phytophysiognomies (cerrado sensu stricto, gallery forest, shrubby caatinga, riparian forest, and rocky field). Eighty-four different insect gall morphotypes were reported, 48 (57.14%) of them on 42 host species in Cerrado and 36 (42.86%) on 24 host species in Caatinga. Most galls occurred on leaves (48.72%) and were globoid (53.76%), glabrous (52.92%), isolated (55.44%), usually one-chambered (61.32%), and brown (25.2%). The gall-inducing insects identified belonged to Lepidoptera (n = 1), Thysanoptera (n = 1), Hemiptera (n = 2), and Diptera (Cecidomyiidae) (n = 16). This was the first inventory of galls in the Chapada Diamantina, so all records are new for the region. We also recorded the first occurrences of galls on two Cerrado plant species and on two in the Caatinga. We found a significant positive correlation between gall richness and plant species richness, suggesting that radiation of gall-inducing insects may be associated with plant species richness.

Abstract Argentina is the country with the second highest number of bee species in the Neotropics after Brazil. Fifteen new records of wild bees belonging to genera of the families Apidae, Andrenidae, Colletidae, Halictidae, and Megachilidae are presented. Species of genera Callonychium Brèthes (Andrenidae), Gaesischia Michener, LaBerge & Moure, Melitoma Lepeletier & Serville, Trichocerapis Cockerell (Apidae), Hylaeus Fabricius (Colletidae), Habralictus Moure, Megalopta Smith, Neocorynura Schrottky, Pseudaugochlora Michener, Rhectomia Moure, Thectochlora Moure (Halictidae), and Bothranthidium Moure (Megachilidae) are recorded for the first time for Argentina. Whereas the genera Trichocerapis, Megalopta, Rhectomia, and Bothranthidium are cited for the first time in the country.

Otolith as a tool to differentiate juveniles of two species Centropomidae Carvalho, Barbara Maichak de Bot Neto, Renato Luiz Schwarz Júnior, Roberto Spach, Henry Louis Volpedo, Alejandra Vanina

Abstract Centropomus undecimalis and Centropomus ensifurus are a species belonging to the family Centropomidae, which has an important role in estuarine ecosystem. The present study aimed at comparing the otoliths shape of juveniles both species collected in in the lower São Francisco River (10°28′34.02″S, 36°24′27.02″W). In the laboratory, 52 otoliths were extracted, photographed, measured and the contour was analyzed by the wavelet method. The otolith contours varied between species (n = 28 C. ensiferus and n = 24 C. undecimalis). The Linear Discriminant Analysis correctly reclassified 92.3% of all otoliths among species. MANOVA also evidenced significant differences in contour between species (F = 3.73; p < 0.0001). The results suggest that C. ensiferus is adapted to enviroments with higher turbidity and the C. undecimalis tends to colonize environments with lower turbidity and spends more time in the water column.

Five new species of Asphondylia (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae, Asphondyliini) from Brazilian restinga (Atlantic Forest) Maia, Valéria Cid

Abstract Asphondylia braziliensissp. nov.,Asphondylia fluminensissp. nov.,Asphondylia marambaiensissp. nov.,Asphondylia varroniaesp. nov., and Asphondylia xerezi sp. nov., are described based on material from Brazilian restingas. The first species induces galls on Struthanthus acuminatus (Ruiz. & Pav.) Kuijt (Loranthaceae), the second on Erythroxylum ovalifolium Peyr (Erythroxylaceae), the third on Lantana fucata Lindl. (Verbenaceae), the fourth on Varronia curassavica Jacq. (Cordiaceae), and the fifth on Heliotropium sp. (Heliotropiaceae). One host plant, Erythroxylum ovalifolium, is endemic to the Atlantic forest. The other plant species are native to Brazil. Illustrations of relevant morphological characters are provided. The new species are compared with congeneric Neotropical species. Types are deposited in the Entomological Collection of the Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract In this paper, we treat three species of Neurostigma. For the first, N. roesleriNew, 1980 we provide illustrations of the holotype, a revised diagnosis, the female redescription, including the first description of the spermatheca and a distribution map of the species considering N. garcialdretei Mendivil Nieto, Gonzalez Obando & Carrejo Gironza, 2020 syn. nov. For the second species, N. enderleini New, we redescribe the male, describe and illustrate the unknown female, and provide a revised diagnosis and new records for the Brazilian states of Amapá and Rondônia. For the third species, N. xanthopterumNew, 1980, we include the first description and illustration of the spermatheca.

Diversity of insect galls in veredas of the Brazilian Cerrado in Minas Gerais, Brazil Grandez-Rios, Julio Miguel Rhie, Matthias Yunsu Costa, Leonardo Vinicius Ataíde Gonçalves, Maria Fernanda Araújo, Walter Santos de

Abstract Brazilian veredas are hygrophilous communities with high species diversity, featuring many floristic studies but a still incipient number of faunistic studies. In the present study, we conducted an inventory of insect galls in four different veredas located in the Northern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Overall, we found 75 gall morphotypes, distributed across 50 host species representing 37 plant genera and 22 families. Fabaceae was the plant family with the greatest number of insect gall morphotypes (n = 21), followed by Malpighiaceae (n = 10). The plant genera that supported the highest diversity of insect galls were Copaifera (n = 8) and Byrsomima (n = 5). The plant species Copaifera oblongifolia (n = 6) and Anacardium humile (n = 4) exhibited the highest richness of insect galls. The leaves were the most attacked organs (89% of all galls). Most morphotypes are glabrous (83%), green (69%) and lenticular (60%). The taxa of gall-inducing insects were identified for 46 morphotypes (80%), and were recorded inducers from the orders Diptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera. Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) was the most representative galling group, with 42 morphotypes, making up 93.3% of the recorded inducers. Among the sampled veredas areas, the Vereda do Peruaçu presented the highest richness of insect gall morphotypes and host plant species. The faunistic similarity was higher in the Pedras and Tiririca veredas, followed by Almescla and Peruaçu veredas. This is the first systematic inventory of insect galls and their host plant in Brazilian veredas. The diversity of insect galls in the studied veredas is relatively high when compared to other Brazilian Cerrado vegetation types.

Abstract Microdesmus longipinnis was documented for the first time in the Brazilian semiarid coast. Previous occurrences of this species ranged from the Western Atlantic, North Carolina (USA) to the southeastern coast of Brazil, and there is still a substantial gap between these regions. Specimens were collected in the Curu and Pacoti estuaries, Ceará state, Brazil. These new records of M. longipinnis can help to fill a portion of the geographical distribution gap for species inhabiting estuaries under the semiarid climate of Brazil.

An illustrated catalog of Disteniidae (Coleoptera: Chrysomeloidea) type specimens deposited at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo Botero, Juan Pablo Casari, Sônia A. Santos-Silva, Antonio

Abstract The type specimens of the family Disteniidae Thomson, 1861 (Coleoptera) housed at the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP) are cataloged and illustrated. Photos of dorsal and ventral habitus, labels, and complete label data of all the specimens are provided. There are 147 specimens belonging to 70 names: 33 primary types, 31 holotypes, and two lectotypes; and 114 secondary types, 52 paratypes, and two paralectotypes. Elytrimitatrix (Grossifemora) Santos-Silva & Hovore, 2007 is the genus with the greatest number of species with type material, 21 species, followed by Cometes Lepeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828 and Novantinoe Santos-Silva & Hovore, 2007 with 15 and 13 species, respectively.

Abstract The subfamily Phlebotominae is represented by insects commonly known as sand flies widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, with the Neotropical region having the greatest diversity. Only New Zealand or the Pacific Islands, excepting New Caledonia, do not present records. One means of access to the more than 1,060 described species is through the specimens deposited in biological collections, and the availability of associated data on online platforms for consultation on the part of students and researchers. This being the case, this study aimed catalogue the sand flies deposited in the Invertebrate Collection of the MZUSP (University of São Paulo Museum of Zoology). Twenty-nine species designated as type material were found being of nine holotypes, one “allotype” and 90 paratypes described from five countries in the Americas: Panama, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, and Brazil. In addition to these, 1,346 non-type specimens, from 12 Brazilian states, are deposited in the collection and have been included here in list form. The MZUSP sand fly collection currently houses specimens from 152 species, which represents 28% (546) of the Phlebotominae fauna of the Americas.

Abstract Anastrepha zenildae Zucchi is an important pest in the Semi-Arid region of Rio Grande do Norte and other states in Brazil, with Guava being its main host. Environment induced morphological changes in adult fruit flies can lead to mating incompatibilities among populations within a species. Furthermore, sexual isolation between these populations can be one of the first steps in the speciation process, as described to other tephritid fly species. Here, we compared several body measurements through analysis of variance and geometric morphometrics to assess significant morphological differences between sympatric flies from different hosts: Guava and Jua. We found significant differences in body size for both sexes of flies from the different fruit hosts, with flies from Guava being the larger. Different degrees of sexual size dimorphism of flies from each fruit has also been detected. Flies from different fruits also exhibited different wing shapes, even though the pattern of sexual shape dimorphism remained the same for both fruits. These results show the influence of the host fruits on adult fruit fly morphology, a phenomenon that must be considered when implementing pest control programs such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). Further studies are needed to explore mating preference and genetic structure between these populations.

A new species of the extant genus Bulasconotus from mid Cretaceous Kachin amber (Coleoptera: Zopheridae: Colydiinae) Li, Yan‑Da Jin, Zhen‑Yu Ślipiński, Adam Huang, Di‑Ying Cai, Chen‑Yang

Abstract A fossil species of the extant colydiine genus Bulasconotus Ślipiński & Lawrence, B. carinisternus Li, Ślipiński & Cai sp. nov., is reported from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber of northern Myanmar. The new species shares with extant Bulasconotus the 3 segmented antennal club, externally open procoxal cavities, and similar sculpture on the pronotum and elytra, but could be recognized by the medially carinated prosternal process. The present discovery provides a valuable example of morphological stasis in the cylindrical bark beetles.

First record of Pyrgotidae (Diptera, Tephritoidea) from Uruguay with two new synonyms in the genus Leptopyrgota Hendel Mello, Ramon Luciano

Abstract Pyrgotidae are a small family of Tephritoidea of worldwide distribution, whose larvae are known to be endoparasites in the abdomen of adult Scarabaeidae beetles. This study presents the first record of the family from Uruguay, represented by the Leptopyrgota albitarsisAczél, 1956 from Treinta y Tres, Quebrada de los Cuervos. Based on the study of holotypes, the following synonymy is proposed: Leptopyrgota albitarsisAczél, 1956 = Leptopyrgota definiendaBernardi, 1991, new synonym and L. liaeBernardi, 1991 new synonym. Photos of the holotypes of the three studied species are presented, for the first time.

Geographic variation in the acoustic signals of lesser treefrogs Dendropsophus minutus (Anura, Hylidae) Chaves, Maycon Veiga Sena, Vitor Matheus Alcântara de Diniz, Pedro

Abstract Biological sound archives are a major source to investigate geographic variation in animal acoustic signals and their evolutionary drivers. The acoustic signals of anuran species with wide distribution ranges often vary geographically as a result of isolation by distance and climate amongst other factors. We examined whether the acoustic structure of call notes would vary geographically in lesser treefrogs Dendropsophus minutus using recordings from bioacoustics repositories. We also tested whether climate (mean annual temperature and annual precipitation) drive geographic variation in those signals. The acoustic distance was unrelated to geographic distance, suggesting that isolation by distance solely cannot explain geographic variation in call structure. Overall, lesser treefrogs uttered call notes with lower frequencies and bandwidths in the west of their range. In addition, frogs produced shorter call notes in hotter, wetter sites and narrow-bandwidth notes in hotter environments. We suggest that frogs produce more calls (not measured here) of shorter durations to maximize transmission and minimize the metabolic costs of calling at high air temperatures. We also suggest that hotter environments favor the propagation of lower-bandwidth calls. This study reinforces the feasibility and power of citizen science and acoustic data repositories for understanding the evolution of anuran acoustic signals.

Unveiling the genetic diversity of bicolored spined porcupines (Rodentia: Erethizontidae): a novel karyotype, population structuring, and evolutionary insights Cardoso, Maria Julia Cunha Lazar, Ana Povill, Cintia Bonvicino, Cibele Rodrigues

Abstract New World porcupines are rodents belonging to the Erethizontidae family which is divided into two subfamilies: Chaetomyinae, represented by the genus Chaetomys, and Erethizontinae, which includes the genera Erethizon and Coendou. Within this family, the taxonomy of Coendou has proven to be particularly complex and challenging. It remains one of the most neglected among New World mammals, and the taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships of some taxa are still controversial. In this study, we assessed the diversity of Coendou bicolor using the mitochondrial cytochrome b marker and described the chromosome complement of this species for the first time, increasing the knowledge about this taxon. Notably, the karyotype we described for C. bicolor differs from the six karyotypes reported for other species within this genus. Our findings align with previous research, confirming the separation of the three Coendou subgenera into distinct monophyletic clades. The median joining analysis supports these phylogenetic relationships and suggested a population structure in C. bicolor populations, apparently related to the rivers. Samples from northern Peru are separated from the remaining population by the Ucayali River (a tributary of the Amazonas River), while samples from southern Peru and Brazil are separated from Bolivian samples by the Madre de Dios/Beni rivers. These data highlight the potential role of these rivers as geographic barriers, contributing to the genetic differentiation of C. bicolor populations. Our study provides valuable insights into karyotype and genetic diversity of C. bicolor populations, enriching our understanding of this species.

Abstract Haminoea maray is introduced as a replacement for what was previously identified as H. elegans, now recognized as a complex comprising several species found on both sides of the Atlantic. This descriptive paper presents a comprehensive phenotypic study based on specimens collected from Ceará to São Paulo, Brazil, and had been previously recognized as a molecular variant. Biological notes of Harpactor angulosus () (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Maza, Noelia Melo, María Cecilia

Abstract Assassin bugs are one of the most diverse families of cimicomorphan Heteroptera and are known from all biogeographic regions. Except for the kissing bugs (Triatominae) that are hemathophagous, reduviids show a predatory behavior and are usually study as potential biocontrollers of crop pests. In this way, Harpactorines have been specially studied as they are mostly diurnal and live on the vegetation. In this contribution, the complete life cycle of Harpactor angulosus (Lepeletier & Serville, 1825) is described and illustrated. Specimens were collected in the field in El Manantial, San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, and were reared in laboratory to obtain all immatures (eggs and nymphs) and to observe its feeding habits, molting, mating, and oviposition. Collection specimens as well as online resources such as iNaturalist records were also studied to know the current distribution of the species. This resulted in the expansion of H. angulosus distribution in Argentina to Tucumán and Buenos Aires provinces and to the recording of the species in Ecuador, Peru and Paraguay for the first time. Our findings reveal that H. angulosus would be studied as a potential biocontroller of Agraulis sp., an important pest of maracuyá crops in several South American countries.

Abstract The type material of five species of the genus Trichomyia described by Quate were analyzed and new characters, not described in the original descriptions, are described and figured. All specimens analyzed were males. Were studied four Neotropical specimens, T. bilobaQuate, 1999, T. dolickakisQuate, 1996, T. intricateQuate, 1996, and T. xaniostylisQuate, 1996, and T. trukensisQuate, 1959 from Micronesian region.

Description of a new alpheid shrimp from the tropical western Atlantic (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheus) Anker, Arthur

Abstract A new shallow-water species of the alpheid shrimp genus AlpheusFabricius, 1798 is described based on five specimens from Maceió, Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. Bisecting the type series of Leporinus paranensis (Characiformes, Anostomidae) Britski, Heraldo A. Garavello, Júlio C. Oliveira, Claudio Birindelli, José L.O.

Abstract The type series of Leporinus paranensis includes two distinct species, one of which is herein described as new. Leporinus paranensis is redescribed based on its holotype, two paratypes, and additional specimens recently sampled in tributaries of the Grande River, in the north portion of the upper Paraná basin in Brazil. A new species of Leporinus is described based on specimens collected in all major tributaries of the upper Paraná basin in Brazil, and tributaries of the Paraná River in Paraguay. Both species share the presence of three unicuspid teeth on the premaxillary and four on the dentary, a terminal mouth and three dark midlateral blotches on the body. The new species is distinguished from L. paranensis based on the number of scale series around the caudal peduncle (12 vs. 16). Despite the similar body shape, species delimitation analyses using DNA barcodes, applied to compare samples of the new species to congeners, corroborated the uniqueness of the new species. In addition, molecular data revealed that L. bahiensis, L. octofasciatus, and L. taeniatus are possibly closely related to the L. paranensis species group. Conservation statuses of L. paranensis and the new species are recommended based on the IUCN criteria.

Abstract The humid forest zones of northeastern Brazil are recognized as endemic hotspots for pseudothelphusid crabs. In this study, we report new occurrence records of the pseudothelphusids, Fredius ibiapaba and Kingsleya attenboroughi, in humid soil and streams within humid forests of the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. These new records expand the geographical distribution of these crabs, highlighting their potential to inhabit humid forests throughout this region. Furthermore, this information indicates that these crabs, especially K. attenboroughi, are not confined to slopes and patches of humid forests in highland swamps but can also extend to springs in other areas of the Brazilian semi-arid region.

Abstract The use of caves and rocky walls is common for some birds, like swifts, to shelter, sleep, nest, feed, and protect themselves from predators, wind, and rain. Several environmental and ecological factors associated with the habits and adaptations of certain species allow birds to use cave environments. The White-collared Swift Streptoprocne zonaris (Shaw, 1796) is distributed from Mexico and the Antilles south to northern Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazill, being frequent in areas with waterfalls and river rapids with rocky beds and crystal-clear water. Individuals live in flocks and have the habit of roosting and nesting in damp, dark caves or behind waterfalls. Herein, we aim to report the case and identify the cause of death of S. zonaris individuals found dead in a sinkhole in the State of Goiás, Brazil, in 2020. Global warming resulting from anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases can alter the natural fluctuations of atmospheric circulation systems, responsible for rainfall distribution, substantially affecting rainfall and increasing the frequency of heavy rainfall events in some locations. Due to climate change and the increasing frequency of flooding records, we have raised the hypothesis and drawn attention to our record may have been originated due to these climatic events. However, we do not dismiss the hypothesis that the flooding may be due to an extreme event. The fact that S. zonaris spends the night and nests close to water bodies makes the species more susceptible to the effects of a flash flood. Further studies will be able to show the real effects of global warming on the species.

Morphological study of the sclerites of the species Renilla muelleri Kölliker, 1872 (Anthozoa, Octocorallia, Pennatulacea) Gonella, Fátima Micaela Acuña, Fabián Horacio Garese, Agustín

Abstract Some octocorals (Cnidaria, Anthozoa) can produce a sub-millimeter to a millimeter-range skeleton of calcium carbonate, known as sclerites. Sclerites have diverse morphological characters, such as size, and shape features that give them relevance as taxonomic characters at different levels. Renilla Lamarck, 1816, is a genus of the order Pennatulacea (Octocorallia), in which colonies are characterized by two distinct zones: a peduncle, which anchors them to the substrate, and a rachis that supports the polyps. In the case of Renilla muelleri Kölliker, 1872, prior research established the presence of similar sclerites in both the peduncle and the rachis. Nevertheless, the potential morphological variations of these sclerites among colonies and within different colony regions have yet to be assessed to determine the stability of these characteristics at the species level. This study aimed to describe and compare the external microscopic morphology and biometry of the sclerites of Renilla muelleri, enhancing their identification and assessing their consistency within the species. Sclerite composition was examined across the entire colony, and we analyzed length variation among colonies using generalized linear models (GLM) and within colony zones using generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). Additionally, the external microscopic morphology of all sclerites was examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on size, two types of sclerites, namely large and small, were identified within the colonies. Both types exhibited significant size differences among colonies. Furthermore, the large sclerites displayed notable variations between zones, with those in the rachis being the largest and holding the highest rank within the colonies. In terms of external microscopic morphology, the sclerites exhibited considerable variability, making it challenging to establish clear groupings based on these characteristics. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that both the biometry and external microscopic morphology of sclerites do not exhibit consistency as characteristics in Renilla muelleri highlighting the ambiguity in defining Renilla species.

Abstract In the present study we tested whether the distribution of insect galls induced by Jatrophobia brasiliensis (Rübsaamen, 1907) (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) on Manihot caerulenses (Euphorbiaceae) differs between edge and interior environments in a Neotropical savanna in Brazil. We tested the hypothesis that the abundance of galls is higher in the vegetation edge, which is exposed to constant dust from an unpaved road, than in the interior of the savanna, where the penetration of dust is smaller. The study was in the Parque Estadual da Serra do Cabral where 28 plants were sampled, being selected 14 plants inside the vegetation and 14 plants on the road edge. We sampled a total of 269 galls of Jatrophobia brasiliensis, being 203 galls on edge plants and 66 galls on interior plants. Corroborating our expectation, we registered a higher number of insect galls on the edge plants than interior plants. We suggest that dust is the main stressor in border environments of Neotropical savannas, unlike forest vegetation, where microclimatic changes can be more important. Our findings suggest that the environmental changes caused by dust deposition in the edge affect the distribution of insect galls in Neotropical savannas.

Abstract The members of the Calliphoridae family (Insecta: Diptera) have a meaningful impact on human and animal health, and they also have forensic significance. The objective of this work was to provide information to the health system (medical-veterinary) about the life cycle of Lucilia purpurascens (Walker) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) by obtaining life tables that allow analysing its population fluctuations under various environmental conditions in the field and laboratory. For this aim, three replicates of each experience were generated, each consisting of full oviposition. Throughout all seasons of the year, the daily mortality of individuals, from eggs to adults, has been monitored in the field. This was contrasted with laboratory experiences using average seasonal climate data. Using the gathered information, life tables for both sexes were constructed. Most stages of development differed between the seasons investigated in the field and the laboratory, with Postfeeding Larvae and Pupa exhibiting a greater mortality. In all seasons, feeding larval mortality was extremely low. This study demonstrates that imago populations in nature are less abundant than those obtained by laboratory breeding. Despite this, the larvae are successful while eating, and this is the condition that has the biggest impact on the medical-veterinary environment.

Abstract Physa acuta is a freshwater snail of North American origin that has spread to all continents. In South America it was detected for the first time in 1966 (Brazil) and is currently present in Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay, occupying 13 of the 52 South American freshwater eco-regions. Its introduction would be related to the import and transportation of aquatic plants. Here we update the distribution of P. acuta in Argentina based on a review of scientific collections, published works and new collections. Our review expands the distribution of the species from 11/23 Argentine provinces (until 2010) to 19/23, and we report the first record for the province of Santa Cruz, this being the southernmost site of the species. This new discovery in the province of Santa Cruz (Austral Patagonia), with an established and reproducing population in an urban area, poses a potential threat to local biodiversity (where there are no records of other non-native mollusks) and to human and animal health. This is due to the finding of populations in southern Argentina that are naturally infested by Fasciola hepatica. The record of P. acuta in aquatic environments of southern Patagonia makes it necessary to generate monitoring and control plans with the objective of identifying the dispersion vectors and preventing the spread of the species in other water bodies in the region.

Abstract The puparium of Cyphomyia wiedemanniGerstaecker, 1857 is hereby described for the first time, based on 14 puparia from specimens collected buried in soil and feeding off the roots of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) plants in an area of industrial cassava plantation in Distrito Federal (15°35′30″S, 47°42′30″W), Brazil and, reared in controlled lab conditions until the emergence of adults. Unprecedented data on the occurrence of Cyphomyia wiedemanni in Distrito Federal (new record), and the relationship of the larvae with the cassava plants are discussed.

Abstract Macquart (1850) provided the original description of Pelecorhynchus vulpes (= Pangonia vulpes) based on a holotype male from Chile. His description is brief and lacks many morphological details. Therefore, herein we redescribe, in far greater detail, the holotype male of Pelecorhynchus vulpes (Macquart) and describe and illustrate, for the first time, the morphology of the male terminalia.

Abstract Augochloropsis (Glyptochlora) Moure is a morphologically homogeneous and rare subgenus of Augochlorini, endemic to the Amazon Basin. So far, the subgenus was known only from females. Herein, we identified and studied the male of Augochloropsis (Glyptochlora) peruviana Celis & Melo. This specimen represents the first opportunity to document the male morphology of Augochloropsis (Glyptochlora). In addition to the description of the male, including genital capsule and metasomal sterna, we provide an updated diagnosis for A. (Glyptochlora).

Abstract This study is focused on the parasitic wasp Plumarius brasiliensisPenteado-Dias & Scatolini, 2003 (Hymenoptera, Plumariidae). Data assembled from 12 consecutive months of systematic samplings at Parque Nacional Grande Sertão Veredas, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, indicate that the largest populations of P. brasiliensis occur there in the dry season, with few specimens collected in the rainy season, which may indicate that this group or its hosts have a seasonal pattern. This species is also reported for the first time in areas of Cerrado, in the states of Minas Gerais and Maranhão; in the core of Caatinga, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte; and in transition zone between Caatinga and Cerrado, in the state of Piauí, Brazil. The new distributional records in areas of Cerrado and Caatinga/Cerrado ecotone represent a significant increase in the geographic range of P. brasiliensis that can be present in about 35% of the Brazilian territory. Additionally, we provide digital images and diagnosis of this species and a map with the geographical distribution of the studied species based on the new records and literature data.

Unveiling the Understudied: A Look at Phylogenetic Research on Mollusks in Brazil Dornellas, Ana Paula Barroso, Cristiane Xerez Marques, Rodrigo Cesar

Abstract Phylogenies are essential for organizing knowledge on biological diversity, structuring classifications, and providing insights into evolutionary events. Worldwide phylogenetic studies on mollusks emerged in the late 1980s, while in Brazil, phylogenetic analyses of mollusks started around 2000. For unknown reasons, phylogenies of lower hierarchical taxa, such as subfamilies, tribes, and genera, are not common in Malacology. Here, we analyzed articles published by malacologists and evaluated the proportion of alpha taxonomic reviews compared to phylogenetic systematic studies conducted at Brazilian institutions and worldwide. Our searches were performed using the Web of Science and Lattes Platform databases for Brazilian studies. We found 537 systematic/taxonomic papers, of which 11% included an explicit phylogenetic analysis. Additionally, 31 of these studies described a new genus or higher taxon, but only seven included phylogenetic inferences to support taxonomic decisions. The remaining 24 studies relied on alpha taxonomic classification, focusing primarily on conchological features of group-related units. We observed that publications worldwide describing higher taxa based on phylogenetic systematics began in the 1970s, with their proportion increasing over the years. The few phylogenetic analyses published after Willi Hennig’s cladistics suggest that malacologists at Brazilian institutions have not established a tradition of Phylogenetic Systematics for studies on molluscan diversity.

Abstract We document the first recorded occurrence of a Juan Fernández Petrel Pterodroma externa specimen in São Paulo State, South Atlantic, Brazil. This finding improves our understanding of the distribution of this pelagic species, which is rarely observed along the coast. It also suggests that unusual oceanographic conditions may disorient seabirds, causing them to appear in atypical areas.

Abstract The diversity of galling insects may be associated with abiotic factors, such as hygrothermal stress, and biotic factors of the host plants, such as structural complexity and resource concentration. In the present study, we aimed evaluate the occurrence of galling insects Palaeomystella oligophaga (Lepidoptera, Agonoxenidae) associated with Macairea radula (Melastomataceae) in veredas of northern of Minas Gerais, testing the effect of environmental stress, resource concentration and plant architecture.The study was carried out in three veredas with distinct levels of soil drying and conservation (preserved, intermediate and degraded). In each vereda, were selected 20 individuals of the Macairea radula for galling sampling. For each focal plants were sampled the abundance of galls, plant height (m), number of branches and number of individuals close to the focal plant within a radius of 5 m. In total, were sampled 2,030 galls of Palaeomystella oligophaga on Macairea radula. The abundance of galls differed significantly between the plants of the different veredas, being higher in the plants of the Vereda da Almescla (intermediate conservation level). In addition, the abundance of galls was positively correlated with plant height, and the number of nearby individuals (considering all plant species). Our results demonstrate that both anthropic alterations that lead to the dryness of the veredas, and structural characteristics of the host plants, can affect the occurrence of galls of Palaeomystella oligophaga.

A tribal transfer and four new distributional records in South American Cerambycidae (Coleoptera), with notes on Stenoeme aguilari Galileo & Martins and Stenoeme bellarmini Gounelle Santos-Silva, Antonio Silva, Weliton D.

Abstract In this study, we document new Brazilian state records for the cerambycid beetles Eburodacrystola pickeli (Melzer, 1928) (Cerambycinae, Eburiini), Phygomelitta triangularis (Fuchs, 1961) (Cerambycinae, Rhinotragini), and Oreodera bituberculata Bates, 1861 (Lamiinae, Acrocinini). Additionally, Stenoeme aguilari Galileo & Martins, 2010 (Cerambycinae, Oemini) is recorded for the first time in Brazil. We also discuss the probable synonymy between Stenoeme aguilari and S. bellarmini Gounelle, 1909. Furthermore, we propose the transfer of Piezosecus Martins & Galileo, 2003, from Piezocerini to Hesperophanini (Hesperophanina), examining the features currently used to define Hesperophanini and the differences between it and Piezocerini.

New land microsnails of the genus Gastrocopta (Eupulmonata: Gastrocoptidae) in the semiarid region of Brazil Lima, Silvio Felipe Barbosa Abreu, Evandro Cosmo Tomaz de

Abstract In Brazil, Gastrocoptidae Pilsbry, 1918 includes only land microsnails of the genus Gastrocopta Wollaston, 1878. Here, two new species of Gastrocopta are described from the phytogeographic domain of the Caatinga (semiarid scrubland): Gastrocoptajoaoherminioi sp.nov. and Gastrocopta caatinga sp.nov. The shell morphology of G. joaoherminioi sp.nov. differs substantially from native and invasive congeners of Brazil, mainly in the greatly convex whorls as well as in the number and configuration of apertural barriers, which totals 11 very strongly developed teeth (except suprapalatal tooth) that greatly obstruct the region. The shell morphology of G. caatinga sp.nov. has a typical ovoid shape and apertural barriers totaling four teeth that do not obstruct the region (except for the projection of parieto-angular tooth). The new land snails, found in a dense layer of leaf litter on sandy soil at a semi-open dry tropical forest habitat, are compared with congeners from the neotropical region.
