Armed Struggle in Psychology: Class Practice against State Terrorism

Abstract:

This article aims to recapture part of the historiography about the psychologists and students of psychology that integrated armed groups against the class coup of 1964. For this purpose, we consider that the process of development of psychology, as science and profession, shows itself interconnected in the multiple contradictions of the formation of the Brazilian working class. Based on the theoretical and methodological assumptions of historical and dialectical materialism, we recomposed, in the ideal plane, part of the real movement produced by the action of those subjects, who opened cracks and enlarged the basis for discussions that would be made, later, within psychology itself. Knowing this, we sought to recover some illustrative cases of their presence in the organizations of which they were part, reconstructing this movement from the existing publications. We conclude that there is a link between the vanguard of the armed struggle, with the presence of some fractions of psychology, composed mostly by its youth, and the contradictory construction within the profession itself in Brazil. Both are moments in the totality of the history of psychology, which shows the way in which some important sectors have positioned themselves in the struggle against the civil-military dictatorship.
