Notification of Violence: Procedures and Perceptions of Law Professionals and Child Protection Agents

Abstract

This study aimed to know the procedures and perceptions of professionals who work in the System of Guarantee of Rights (SGR) concerning notification of violence involving children and adolescents. Three child protection agents, one chief of police and one prosecutor participated in the study. Individual interviews were carried out and results were analyzed based on content analysis, indicating that the notification of violence involves several procedures, such as the adoption of protective measures and police investigation. Results also highlighted an increase in the cases notified by the community and attended by the rights advocacy services, through the device “Dial 100”. On the other side, the number of notifications accomplished by health care and education professionals is still minor. Therefore, it is important to promote awareness, both as regards the general community, and the professionals, about the notification of violence, so as to enable the responsible services to investigate the notifications and take the adequate measures to guarantee the rights of children and adolescents.
