Understanding female sexual initiation in adolescence

Articles that essentialize the difference between feminine and masculine characteristics have obtained especial attention in The initiation of sexual activity involving genitals mainly occurs during adolescence. Sexual activity currently occurs at even earlier stages of life which may lead to unexpected pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Some aspects of female sexual initiation among low income adolescents, a social group which is highly vulnerable to undesired consequences, are provided. A qualitative method was carried out involving group meetings and semi-structured individual interviews with female workers in the shoe industry in the city of Franca SP Brazil as target population. Results indicate that adolescents with high family cohesion are more accountable for their sexuality, act safer and do not give in to satisfying someone else's desires.
