Social representation of the body in press media

This study aims at investigating the social representations of the body in three Brazilian magazines. It is a document-based research, comprising the magazines Boa Forma, Estilo and Saúde, published between 2005 and 2006, covering a total of 88 articles. The magazine sections were divided into two corpus, regarding the topics of beauty and health. The data analysis was carried out by means of a Descending Hierarchical Classification, using the ALCESTE program. The results show that the body, in these magazines, is either represented through aspects which are mainly physical, related to beauty and body health (more practical), or it is represented as a physical-psychical unit, which prioritizes well-being in order to promote a healthier life (more subjective).
