Ecological devastation in Milton Hatoum's ashes of the Amazon

This article is aimed at investigating the connections of Milton Hatoum's Cinzas do Norte ("Ashes of the Amazon") with ecological trends. The ecological basis are Félix Guattari and Ana Godoy. Cinzas do Norte is a narrative about two friends from Manaus whose friendship begins at a public school in 1964 and lasts until the end of Brazilian civil- military dictatorship. I tried to situate the work of Milton Hatoum in the field of Ecocritics, then relate it to texts by Félix Guattari and Ana Godoy and observe how Hatoum's work contributes with the Environmental Education as a producer of meanings. I claim that literature, particularly Cinzas do Norte , is one way of amplifying repertoires of ecological social and pedagogical practices in every day life. This article is resulted of a research with grants of CNPq about the relationship of Milton Hatoum's texts and postmodern Environmental Education and Cultural Studies.
