  • Síntese e avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana de furanonas halogenadas e de compostos análogos aos nostoclídeos Artigo

    Barbosa, Luiz C. A.; Maltha, Célia R. A.; Demuner, Antônio J.; Pinheiro, Patrícia F.; Varejão, Jodieh O. S.; Montanari, Ricardo M.; Andrade, Nélio J.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Considering the broad spectrum of biological activity of gamma-butyrolactone derivatives, we presented the synthesis of 3,4-dihalo-5-arylidenefuran-2(5H)-ones (17-21) and analogues (24-28) of the natural product nostoclide (7,8). Furanones 17-21 were synthesized from the condensation of aromatic aldehydes with lactones 14 and 15, that were obtained from mucobromic and mucochloric acids. Lactone 15 was converted into the intermediate 23 in 36% overall yield. Compound 23 was then transformed into the nostoclide analogues 24-28. Some of the compounds prepared showed antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus comparable to commercial antibiotics.

The present manuscript shows the synthesis of nickel hydroxide supported in carbon (Ni(OH)2/C) as a alternative material for catalytic alcohol oxidation in alkaline medium. The Ni(OH)2/C was synthesized in different percentage using a sonic bath. No current densities variation during successive cyclic voltammetry experiments was observed. The Ni(OH)2/C electrodes exhibit a potent and persistent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of different alcohols. In addition, alcohols electooxidation occurs in less positive potential compared with noble metal catalyst.
  • Curiosidades sobre a reação aldólica utilizada como etapa chave na síntese Brasileira dos ácidos pterídicos A e B Artigo

Dias, Luiz C.; Salles Jr., Airton G.

    Resumo em Inglês:

This work describes an overview of our synthesis of pteridic acids A and B and discloses some interesting results related to the lithium enolate-mediated aldol reaction used as key step to set up the C5-C15 fragment of these natural products. This first example, as far we know, of an aldol reaction between a chiral enolate of a (Z) enone and a chiral aldehyde has driven us to a series of experiments showing the remarkable relation between enolization selectivity and reaction conditions.

A chemical study on the EtOAc extract produced by Xylaria sp., an endophytic fungus from Piper aduncum, resulted in the isolation of a new cytochalasin 1, along with five known 19,20-epoxycytochalasin D (2), C (3), N (4), Q (5), and R (6). The 1-6 were evaluated against the fungi C. cladosporioides and C. sphaerospermum and only 5 showed weak activity. The cytotoxicity in vitro against HeLA and CHO cells lines were investigated and the cytochalasins 2-4, and 6 showed a strong activity against HeLA. The DNAdamaging activity of 1-6 were also investigated against mutant strains of S. cerevisiae.
  • The syntheses of the marine metabolites 3-bromoverongiaquinol and 5-monobromocavernicolin

Godoy, Luiz Antonio Fonseca de; Pilli, Ronaldo Aloise

    Resumo em Inglês:

An efficient synthesis of the marine metabolite 3-bromoverongiaquinol (1) and the first total synthesis of 5-monobromocavernicolin (2), both isolated from the marine sponge Aplysina cavernicola, have been described based on the 1,2 addition of the lithium enolate of N,O-bistrimethylsilylacetamide (BSA, 4) to 1,4-benzoquinone (3). Bromination and purification of the crude product on silica gel chromatography provided 3-bromoverongiaquinol (1) in 50% overall yield. Under alkaline conditions, the crude product of the bromination reaction was converted to 5-monobromocavernicolin (2) in 20% yield which was also obtained in 13% yield (25% yield based on recovered starting material) from 3-bromoverongiaquinol (1).
  • Electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol by the [Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2(CH3OH)]3+cluster: improving the metal-ligand electron transfer by accessing the higher oxidation states of a multicentered system

Toma, Henrique E.; Araki, Koiti; Formiga, André Luiz Barboza; Alexiou, Anamaria D. P.; Nunes, Genebaldo S.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The [Ru3O(Ac)6(py)2(CH3OH)]+ cluster provides an effective electrocatalytic species for the oxidation of methanol under mild conditions. This complex exhibits characteristic electrochemical waves at -1.02, 0.15 and 1.18 V, associated with the Ru3III,II,II/Ru3III,III,II/Ru 3III,III,III /Ru3IV,III,III successive redox couples, respectively. Above 1.7 V, formation of two RuIV centers enhances the 2-electron oxidation of the methanol ligand yielding formaldehyde, in agreement with the theoretical evolution of the HOMO levels as a function of the oxidation states. This work illustrates an important strategy to improve the efficiency of the oxidation catalysis, by using a multicentered redox catalyst and accessing its multiple higher oxidation states.

  • Transferência de elétron inversa na quimiexcitação da reação peróxi-oxalato usando ativadores facilmente redutíveis Artigo

Bartoloni, Fernando Heering; Ciscato, Luiz Francisco Monteiro Leite; Augusto, Felipe Alberto; Baader, Wilhelm Josef

    Resumo em Inglês:

Chemiluminescence properties of the peroxyoxalate reaction in the presence of activators bearing electron withdrawing substituents were studied, to evaluate the possible occurrence of an inverse electron transfer, from the peroxide intermediate to the activator, in its chemiexcitation step. Relative catalytic rate constants and singlet quantum yields were obtained for the peroxyoxalate reaction, using 9-chloro, 9,10-dichloro, 9-cyano and 9,10-dicyanoanthracenes as activators. The linear free-energy correlation of the relative rate constants with the activators' reduction potentials and the dependence of the quantum yields on the released energy confirm, for the first time, the occurrence of this inverse electron transfer.
  • Filmes ultrafinos de ésteres de celulose: preparo, caracterização e imobilização de proteínas Artigo

Amim Jr., Jorge; Petri, Denise F. S.; Maia, Francisco C. B.; Miranda, Paulo B.

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this study cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) and carboxymehtylcellulose acetate butyrate (CMCAB) films adsorbed onto silicon wafers were characterized by means of ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) and contact angle measurements. The adsorption behavior of lysozyme (LIS) or bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto CAB and CMCAB films was investigated. The amounts of adsorbed LIS or BSA onto CMCAB films were more pronounced than those onto CAB films due to the presence of carboxymethyl group in the CMCAB structure. Besides, the adsorption of BSA molecules on CMCAB films was more favored than that of LIS molecules. Antimicrobial effect of LIS bound to CAB or CMCAB layers was evaluated using Micrococcus luteus as substrate.
  • Arylation of β,γ-unsaturated lactones by a Heck-Matsuda reaction: an unexpected route to aryldiazene butenolides and pyridazinones

Taylor, Jason G.; Correia, Carlos Roque D.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The palladium catalysed coupling of aryldiazonium salts with β-γ-unsaturated lactones under basic conditions has been investigated. Both (3H)-furanone and α-angelicalactone were evaluated as substrates in the Heck Matsuda reaction but both failed to afford the desired arylated butenolides. Under basic conditions, β-γ-unsaturated lactones generate highly nucleophilic enolates that preferentially undergo azo coupling reactions with arenediazonium salts to afford aryldiazene butenolides. The electronic and steric effect of the substituents on the aryldiazonium salt in the azo coupling reaction is described. Aryldiazene-lactone derivatives were obtained in good yields from a highly facile and straightforward procedure. An aminoisomaleimide was formed from (3H)-furanone and cyclised to the corresponding pyridazinones in modest yield.
  • Electrochemical study, on mercury, of a Meta-nitroarylamine derivative of nor-β-lapachone, an antitumor and trypanocidal compound

Souza, Antonio A. de; Moura, Maria Aline B. F. de; Abreu, Fabiane C. de; Goulart, Marília O. F.; Silva Jr., Eufrânio N. da; Pinto, Antonio V.; Ferreira, Vitor F.; Moscoso, Raúl; Núñez-Vergara, Luis J.; Squella, Juan A.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The electrochemistry of 2,2-dimethyl-(3H)-3-(N-3'-nitrophenylamino)naphtho[1,2- b]furan-4,5-dione ([Q]-PhNO2), on mercury was investigated. The first peak is consistent with a quasi-reversible one-electron reduction of the ortho-quinone, forming [Q•-]-PhNO2, while the second one, bielectronic, corresponds to the simultaneous reduction of the latter radical to a dianion and the nitro group to a nitro radical anion. The second order rate constant, k disp, for the decay of [Q•-]-PhNO2 is 15.188 x 10³ ± 827 mol"1 L s"1 and the t1/2 equals 0.06 s. E¹7Ic values for [Q]-PhNO2 and its precursor, nor-β-lapachone, are similar. The ease of semiquinone generation and its stability are parameters statistically relevant in the correlation biochemical/theoretical aspects.

  • Concentrações e associações geoquímicas de Pb e Zn em sedimentos do rio São Francisco impactados por rejeitos da produção industrial de zinco Artigo

Gomes, Marcos Vinícius Teles; Costa, Adnivia Santos; Garcia, Carlos Alexandre Borges; Passos, Elisângela Andrade; Alves, José do Patrocínio Hora

    Resumo em Inglês:

Surface sediments from the River São Francisco were analyzed to investigate the impact, due to the presence of metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) in wastes from a metallurgical industry in the city of Três Marias/MG, Brazil. The concentrations and geochemical associations of Pb, Zn and trace metals associated with the minerals employed in zinc production were measured. Sediments close to discharge locations were highly contaminated with Pb (332-512 μg g-1) and Zn (7872-10780 μg g-1), with values decreasing rapidly due to dilution and hydraulic sorting. Evaluation of toxicity according to the Consensus-based Sediment Quality Guidelines indicated for Cd, Pb and Zn a high probability of adverse effects on aquatic biota at these sites.

This work reports on the SERS activity of a nanostructured substrate that was obtained by electrodepositing gold over a template consisting of polystyrene microspheres. This substrate displayed superior SERS performance for the detection of 4-merctaptopyridine as compared to a conventional roughened Au electrode. In order to investigate the substrate capability for the detection at low concentration limits, a series of Rhodamine 6G (1 nM) spectra were registered. Our spectral dynamics data is in agreement with single-molecule behavior, showing that the control over the substrate morphology is crucial to enable the production of highly reproducible and sensitive SERS substrates.
  • Gas-phase solvolysis type reactions of SiCl3+ cations

Firmino, Thiago Diamond Reis; Menegon, Jair J.; Riveros, José M.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Gas-phase SiCl3+ ions undergo sequential solvolysis type reactions with water, methanol, ammonia, methylamine and propylene. Studies carried out in a Fourier Transform mass spectrometer reveal that these reactions are facile at 10-8 Torr and give rise to substituted chlorosilyl cations. Ab initio and DFT calculations reveal that these reactions proceed by addition of the silyl cation to the oxygen or nitrogen lone pair followed by a 1,3-H migration in the transition state. These transition states are calculated to lie below the energy of the reactants. By comparison, hydrolysis of gaseous CCl3+ is calculated to involve a substantial positive energy barrier.
  • Eletrização de dielétricos: novas propostas para resolver velhos problemas Artigo

Gouveia, Rubia F.; Ducati, Telma R. D.; Burgo, Thiago A. L.; Rezende, Camila A.; Bernardes, Juliana S.; Galembeck, Fernando

    Resumo em Inglês:

Electrostatic phenomena were discovered long ago but their interpretation according to well-established atomic-molecular theory is still lacking. As a result, electrostatic phenomena are often irreproducible and uncontrolled, causing serious practical problems. Highly reproducible recent experimental results on electrostatic charging from this and other laboratories are reviewed in this work, together with a description of the relevant but not so usual Kelvin probe and Faraday cup techniques. These results support a new model for electrostatic charging of dielectrics and insulated metals, based on the role of moist atmosphere as a charge reservoir.

Ferraz, Helena M. C.; Scalfo, Alexsandra C.; Vilalba, Bruno T.; Longo Jr, Luiz S.

    Resumo em Inglês:

A systematic study of the reaction of β-hydroxy ethers with ruthenium tetraoxide (RuO4), generated in situ from ruthenium trichloride and sodium periodate, is presented, leading to nine-membered ring keto-lactones in moderate yields. Three different solvent systems - AcOEt/MeCN/H2O, MeCN/H2O and DMC/H2O - were studied leading to the desired products in lower yields than those obtained with the classical mixture of CCl4/MeCN/H2O, commonly used in reactions promoted by this oxidant. However, it is noteworthy that these new solvent systems represent greener alternatives to the chlorinated solvents used in the oxidative cleavage of β-hydroxy ethers by RuO4.

  • Spectroscopic characterization of schiff base-copper complexes immobilized in smectite clays

Dias, Patrícia M.; Kinouti, Lilian; Constantino, Vera R. L.; Ferreira, Ana M. D. C.; Gonçalves, Marcos B.; Nascimento, Rafael R. do; Petrilli, Helena M.; Caldas, Marília; Frem, Regina C. G.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Herein, the immobilization of some Schiff base-copper(II) complexes in smectite clays is described as a strategy for the heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts. The obtained materials were characterized by spectroscopic techniques, mostly UV/Vis, EPR, XANES and luminescence spectroscopy. SWy-2 and synthetic Laponite clays were used for the immobilization of two different complexes that have previously shown catalytic activity in the dismutation of superoxide radicals, and disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide. The obtained results indicated the occurrence of an intriguing intramolecular redox process involving copper and the imine ligand at the surface of the clays. These studies are supported by computational calculations.
  • Effect of temperature on the electro-oxidation of ethanol on platinum

Camargo, Ana Paula M.; Previdello, Bruno A. F.; Varela, Hamilton; Gonzalez, Ernesto R.

    Resumo em Inglês:

We present in this work an experimental investigation of the effect of temperature (from 25 to 180 ºC) in the electro-oxidation of ethanol on platinum in two different phosphoric acid concentrations. We observed that the onset potential for ethanol electro-oxidation shifts to lower values and the reaction rates increase as temperature is increased for both electrolytes. The results were rationalized in terms of the effect of temperature on the adsorption of reaction intermediates, poisons, and anions. The formation of oxygenated species at high potentials, mainly in the more diluted electrolyte, also contributes to increase the electro-oxidation reaction rate.

  • Solvation simplified

    El Seoud, Omar A.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The effects of solvents on chemical phenomena is complex because there are various solute-solvent interaction mechanisms. Solvatochromism refers to the effects of solvents on the spectra of probes. The study of this phenomenon sheds light on the relative importance of the solvation mechanisms. Solvation in pure solvents is quantitatively analyzed in terms of a multi-parameter equation. In binary solvent mixtures, solvation is analyzed by considering the organic solvent, S, water, W, and a 1:1 hydrogen bonded species (S-W). The applications of solvatochromism to understand distinct chemical phenomena, reactivity and swelling of cellulose, is briefly discussed.
  • Metilglioxal: uma toxina endógena? Revisão

Sartori, Adriano; Bechara, Etelvino José Henriques

    Resumo em Inglês:

Methylglyoxal is a very reactive α-oxoaldehyde putatively produced by glycolysis, cytochrome P450-catalyzed acetone oxidation and aminoacetone oxidation. Methylglyoxal has been pointed as a substrate for the glyoxalase system ultimately energy-yielding pyruvate, but methylglyoxal is also a toxicant involved in protein aggregation and DNA modification. Controversial hypothesis on methylglyoxal as an anticancer agent, an energy-yielding glycolysis intermediates, and as a regulator of cell division have also been proposed. Methylglyoxal research focuses now on unveiling its biological properties and on the discovery of drugs capable to inhibit its toxic effects, principally in diabetes.

Keles, Larissa Costa; Melo, Nathalya Isabel de; Aguiar, Gabriela de Paula; Wakabayashi, Kamila Akemi Lima; Carvalho, Carlos Eduardo de; Cunha, Wilson Roberto; Crotti, Antônio Eduardo Miller; Lopes, João Luis Callegari; Lopes, Norberto Peporine

    Resumo em Inglês:

This work reviews the current literature about the chemical constituents and the biological activities of the subtribe Lychnophorinae (Vernonieae, Asteraceae). The notable secondary metabolites are sesquiterpene lactones of furanoheliangolide (goyazensolide and eremantholide types) and flavonoids. Some of its most investigated activities include its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities, specially for the Lychnophora and Eremanthus species. The data presented on this paper not only displayed the role played by the Lychnophorinae species as a source of bioactive compounds, but also reinforced the need of further studies involving the species of such subtribe.
  • Potencialidades do uso de ultrassom na determinação do pesticida carbaril empregando eletrodos de diamante Nota Técnica

    Garbellini, Gustavo S.; Avaca, Luis A.; Salazar-Banda, Giancarlo R.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The potentiality of the use of ultrasound radiation in association with a boron-doped diamond electrode was evaluated on the voltammetric determination of the pesticide carbaryl. Improvements in the sensitivity, limit of detection and reproducibility of the measurements were observed due to both, the enhancement of mass transport and the cleaning of the electrode surface provided by ultrasound. Satisfactory recovery levels for carbaryl in pure water (96-98%) and pineapple juice (89-92%) for quiescent and sonovoltammetric methodologies were obtained. These methodologies can be alternative tools for the analyses of pesticides in fruit samples, mainly the insonated condition that improve the analytical performance and dispense intermediary cleanings of the electrode surface.
  • Construção de espectrômetro de emissão atômica com atomização eletrotérmica em filamento de tungstênio (WCAES) Nota Técnica

Gonzalez, Mário H.; Santos, Luana N.; Nóbrega, Joaquim A.; Rocha, Fábio R. P.

    Resumo em Inglês:

It is here discussed the development of a low cost analytical instrument with capacity for metals determination using atomic emission measurements in an electrothermal atomization system with a tungsten coil atomizer. The main goal was to show a new frontier for using this atomizer and to demonstrate that the simple instrumental arrangement here proposed has potential for portability and for solving analytical tasks related to metals determination. Atomic emission of calcium was selected for the adjustment of instrumental parameters and to evaluate the main characteristics of the lab-built instrument. Cobalt was determined in medicines and one alloy to demonstrate its feasibility.
  • Measuring air pressure with a polymeric gas sensor

Cordeiro, Juliana R.; Teixeira, Wanderson S. R.; Lippi, Renata; Li, Rosamaria W. C.; Ventura, Leonardo; Gruber, Jonas

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this communication we describe the application of a conductive polymer gas sensor as an air pressure sensor. The device consists of a thin doped poly(4'-hexyloxy-2,5-biphenylene ethylene) (PHBPE) film deposited on an interdigitated metallic electrode. The sensor is cheap, easy to fabricate, lasts for several months, and is suitable for measuring air pressures in the range between 100 and 700 mmHg.
  • Reação da cânfora com boroidreto de sódio: uma estratégia para o estudo da estereoquímica da reação de redução Educação

Alves, Péricles B.; Victor, Mauricio M.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Reduction of camphor to a mixture of borneol and isoborneol was performed using NaBH4 as the reducing agent under suitable conditions. Although more effective reduction was accomplished using toxic methanol, an alternative non-toxic ethanolic system is described. This experiment is important to introduce undergraduate students in reductive procedures, and can be used to show details on stereoselective procedures on carbonyl moieties (facial diastereoselectivity, Bürgi-Dunitz trajectory, diastereomeric excess).

This article describes the preparation of 5-nitroisatin and of 5-chloroisatin from isonitrosoacetanilide in a single step, using readily available and inexpensive reagents. These reactions require around 90 minutes and may be carried out as an undergraduate experiment, providing an opportunity to discuss the electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism, as well as spectroscopic techniques for product identification.
  • Sulfetos: por que nem todos são insolúveis? Educação

Martins, Cláudia Rocha; Silva, Luciana Almeida; Andrade, Jailson Bittencourt de

    Resumo em Inglês:

The solubility of sulfides is discussed in this article based on the factors that can influence this property, such as predominant type of chemical bonds and structures formed in many compounds. For soluble sulfides, considerations are made on the thermodynamic parameters and the acid-base equilibrium, since the sulfide anion is extensively hydrolyzed in aqueous solutions. On the other hand, for the insoluble sulfides, the discussion concerned the influence of structural factors that will be determinant for the low solubility.
