WEBER AND ISLAM: A CRITICAL REVIEW

This paper aims to present some criticism about Weber’s scattered and fragmentary considerations regarding the Islamic religion. Some authors affirm that the Weberian analysis, despite being fragmented, has several analytical and methodological flaws. To do so, we will present only the sociologically most criticized points, namely: the description of the Islamic community, taking into account its form of organization (city), its objective structure (type of domination) and its legal system (sacred law) in contrast to those of the West; the characterization of the carrier stratum in relation to the prophet Muhammad’s message; the notion of “Holy” applied by Weber to the religiously virtuous, such as the dervish (or Sufi ) and the Sheik ; the sociological characterization of the Islamic religion.
