Analysis of pressures in vertical silo of masonry of bricks

The objective of this research was to determine the vertical and horizontal pressures on the walls and at the bottom of a cylindrical silo with height/diameter equal to 1 and to compare the obtained theoretical pressures through international rules. The silo was built in masonry of bricks, with 8 holes fixing externally nine steel braces. The applied methodology and techniques had been the ones as indicated by the rules with the necessary adaptations. The stream properties of the product were determined in the shearing machine translational direct Jenike Shear Cell. The theoretical pressures were calculated in agreement with the recommendations of the rules DIN 1055, ACI 313 and ISO 11697. The product used in the tests was the sand due to its density being approximately two times higher than the values for most of the cereals. For determination of pressures the silo was equiped with 6 load cells, with 4 settled in the wall and 2 in the bottom, all of them connected to a data acquisition system. Through the analysis of the data obtained experimentally, together with the knowledge of the product properties the type of studied silo presents potential that allows its use for storage of grains in the farms.
