Utilization of efflluent of cold-storage plant, treated with aquatic macrophyte, in the Nile tilapia cultivation

Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultivation in the agroindustrial (slaughterhouse) effluent treated in a water hyacinth system. The water hyacinth system was built with four gutters of 3 m of length by 0.40 m of width and 0.20 m of depth. The Nile tilapia cultivation was accomplished in water hyacinth system effluent, operated at a tem days hydraulic detention time, in 30 L experimental aquariums (5 fishes per aquarium), considering development and survival. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized statistical design, with six treatments and four replications. The fishes were fed three times a day. The treated effluent showed to be an alternative culture means for the Nile tilapia cultivation due to the removal of ammoniacal-N, since this is the main problem of fish cultivation in agroindustrial effluent. The culture using treated effluent provided similar yield compared to conventional Nile tilapia cultivation.
