A maioria dos resultados da dinâmica relativística já havia sido obtida antes do artigo de Einstein de 1905. A partir do eletromagnetismo, já haviam sido obtidas relações entre massa e velocidade, e massa e energia. Esses desenvolvimentos foram devidos a uma crença generalizada no éter como sendo uma realidade física capaz de produzir forças e que era dotado de propriedades mecânicas como massa, energia e momento. Este artigo descreve o desenvolvimento dessas idéias e compara os resultados obtidos pelos partidários do éter com as propostas de Einstein.

Most of the results of relativistic dynamics had already been obtained before Einstein's 1905 paper. Relations between mass and velocity, and mass and energy, had already been obtained from electromagnetic theory. Those developments were due to a widespread belief in the ether as a physical reality, that could produce forces and was endowed with mechanical properties such as mass, energy and momentum. This paper describes the development of those ideas and compares the results obtained by the ether partisans and Einstein's proposals.

O trabalho de Einstein intitulado Sobre o teorema quântico de Sommerfeld e de Epstein [1,2], publicado em 1917, propõe uma generalização da regra de quantização de Bohr, Sommerfeld e Epstein para sistemas multidimensionais integráveis. Ao mesmo tempo, Einstein nota que sistemas não-integráveis não podem ser quantizados dessa maneira. Essa observação indica pela primeira vez a não trivialidade do limite semiclássico de sistemas caóticos, e pode ser considerado como pioneiro da teoria de caos quântico.

Einstein's paper On the quantum theorem of Sommerfeld and Epstein [1,2], published in 1917, proposes a generalization of the quantization rule of Bohr, Sommerfeld and Epstein for multi-dimensional integrable systems. Einstein also points out that non-integrable systems could not be quantized with such rules. This observation indicates for the first time the non-triviality of the semiclassical limit of chaotic systems and can be considered a pioneer in the theory of quantum chaos.

Com sua análise crítica e extensão da técnica desenvolvida por Bose para o problema da radiação do corpo negro, Einstein ajudou a lançar as bases daquilo que chamamos de mecânica estatística quântica bem como previu a condensação que hoje leva seu nome e o de Bose. Nesta pequena introdução à tradução do texto original de Einstein, situamos o trabalho deste dentro do contexto da época bem como discutimos algumas das polêmicas por ele suscitadas.

With a critical analysis of Bose's technique for the blackbody radiation problem, Einstein extended the theory and helped lay the foundations of what we now call quantum statistical mechanics. He also predicted the condensation phenomenon known nowadays as Bose-Einstein condensation. In this short introduction I discuss the context in which Einstein did his work as well as some of the controversies it raised at the time.

Discutimos a importância das soluções exatas das equações de Einstein no desenvolvimento da relatividade geral, em particular as soluções com simetria axial. Apresentamos um resumo da teoria da gravitação newtoniana colocando ênfase nas soluções exatas da equação de Poisson, em particular a geração de soluções que representam discos, sendo também o critério de estabilidade de Rayleigh discutido neste contexto. Fazemos um resumo da teoria da gravitação de Einstein e apresentamos a solução de Weyl que representa o campo gravitacional de um corpo com simetria axial. A geração de soluções exatas das equações de Einstein que representam o espaço-tempo associado a discos finos, discos grossos e discos com halos é estudada usando uma extensão do método das imagens. Os parâmetros físicos dos discos tais como a densidade, a pressão e a velocidade do som também são analisados em detalhe. A estabilidade de Rayleigh e a estabilidade hidrodinâmica são também estudadas para uma família de discos finos isotrópicos previamente apresentada.

We discuss the relevance of the exact solutions to the Einstein equations in the development of general relativity, in particular the solutions with axial symmetry. We present a summary of the Newtonian gravity theory with emphasis in the generation of solutions to the Poisson equation that represent disks. Also the Rayleigh criterion of stability is discussed in this context. We give a summary of the Einstein theory of gravitation and present the Weyl solution that represent the gravitational field of a body with axial symmetry. The generation of exact solutions to the Einstein equations that describe the space-time associated to thin disks, thick disks and disks with halos is studied using an extention of the image method. The physical parameters of the disks such as, density, pressure, sound velocity are also analyzed in detail. Furthermore, both the Rayleigh stability and hydrodynamical stability are studied for a family of thin isotopic disks previously studied.
