The role of Bioethics and Communication in Medical Education

Abstract:

This essay is intended to show the role of bioethics and communication theory in medical education, viewed as a process of building relations between two types of social actors - teachers and students - and based on mutual recognition among moral individuals who are in principle both competent and responsible. After presenting the intuitive and critical concepts of bioethics and communication, the article discusses the consensus-based communication act theory, attempting to display its strengths and limitations in referring to moral individuals acting in non-confessional, multicultural societies. The easy then inquires into the possibilities of replacing consensus with the concepts of cooperation among moral agents and coordination of their cognitive and prescriptive practices, considered more adequate for the cognitive pluralism and normative acquiescence prevailing in such societies and founded on the principle of respect for personal autonomy, amenable to solving interest and value conflicts.
