The Impact of Medical School on Student’s Quality of Life at the Fluminense Federal University

Abstract:

For several decades, medical students’ quality of life has been the object of research in several countries, including Brazil. Such studies concentrate on specific aspects like stress, psychosomatic disorders, and use of psychoactive substances. This study, based on the Action-Based Research model, was divided into two stages. The first sought to identify and elucidate the positive and negative influences of medical training at the Fluminense Federal University as perceived by students from the first eight semesters and impacting students quality of life as of mid-1999, as well as factors identified by students that generated or maintained such influences. The second stage, still under way, consist of discussion concerning the main problems identified during the first stage and respective proposals, with participation by students and professors.
