Elementary school quality indicators: the use of data mining and multidimensional data visualization for decision support and formulation of public policies

The Brazilian Ministry of Education stores data bases which contain millions of records of students, teachers, elementary schools and their principals. Despite of its great importance, these data bases are not explored in its total potentiality. The great volume of data creates some difficulties related to the manipulation of the information. This paper shows some knowledge discovery technologies that can be used with education data bases. Multidimensional data visualization and data mining concepts are presented. The possibilities and potentialities of both technologies provide agility and facilitate getting quality indicators. Some indicators related to Portuguese Language learning, which were obtained through the use of these technologies, are presented.
