The task of social care and social expectations towards ageing: the importance of reframing the family's role

In Brazil, as in other countries, the population's aging process is a growing problem, reflecting in the family and individual (re)organization, interfering in their life style and compromising not only the quality of family and individual life but also the well-being of all those involved. Studies such as SABE point to the reality experienced by families in the municipality of Sao Paulo, emphasizing the importance for those involved to become organized in order to supply the needs of their elderly relatives, especially those presenting a functional problem. This may be the reality in Brazil, where the largest number families live in a greater situation of constrain, compared to the reality studied. To this end, we attempted to discuss the aging population and the relationship of care within the family, considering the conflicts within this process. The studies showed the need to ensure the process of empowerment of families who experience this reality so they can get better at managing the decision-making processes, the activity of providing and receiving care in order to ensure the final quality of life for those involved.
