Open-access The mercantile forest: timber exploration in the captaincy of Ilhéus in the 18th century

This article analyzes the processes of extraction, processing and trade of timber in the territory of the captaincy of Ilhéus, especially from the moment the Portuguese Crown started to operate this business directly. The analysis will fall on the scale, the administrative mechanisms, the fate of trade and its importance throughout the regional economy.
