ABSTRACT
This article deals with the crossings of modernism in the construction of identity in the city of Cataguases, located in Zona da Mata (MG). The memory triggered by narratives that amplify historical achievements suggests a special kind of urban function connected to the modernism of the Verde magazine and the Ciclo de Cataguases (Humberto Mauro). While shading any expression of popular culture, the myth of cultural vocation invents a locality supposedly prone to the full exercise of avant-garde art.
