ABSTRACT
Antonio Callado and his writings, in general, are interpreted by analysts as belonging to the left-wing field. However, his early tasks in journalism, dramaturgy, and literature, once inserted in the respective fields in which they were conceived, denote conservative ideological and aesthetic orientations. According to pieces of evidence from part of the - unpublished - correspondence exchanged between him and notorious intellectuals from the 1950s until the 1960s, it is possible to suggest that Callado, by championing such positions, wove ties with intellectuals of different political and artistic tendencies, as well as reached more prominent positions in the fields of the press and of literature. In this way, the meanings of his varied manners of engagement might be understood from a different perspective.
