São Paulo, primeiras décadas do século XX. Era comum, nesse período, estratos da população negra saírem às ruas todo ano para comemorar o 13 de Maio - data da abolição da escravatura no Brasil -, por meio de romarias, missas, conferências cívicas, discursos solenes, festivais artístico-culturais, bailes, música, dança e teatro, embalados, na maior parte das vezes, por um clima de emoção e alegria. Apoiando-se em registros diversos, especialmente jornalísticos, o artigo tem a finalidade de descrever e examinar essas comemorações, procurando demonstrar os seus múltiplos sentidos e diferentes significados.

Abstract in English:

São Paulo, the first decades of the twentieth century. It was common in this period for part of the black population to take to the streets every year to celebrate 13 May - date of the abolition of slavery in Brazil -, involving pilgrimages, masses, civic conferences, solemn discourses, artistic and cultural festivals, dances, music, dance, theater and partying, most often in a climate of emotion and joy. Drawing on various registers, especially journalistic, the article aims to describe and examine these commemorations, seeking to demonstrate their multiple meanings and different significances.

O objetivo deste texto é apresentar um panorama das manifestações em torno da Revolução Farroupilha, desde o próprio episódio até sua consolidação como mito fundador da identidade regional no Rio Grande do Sul. Debatendo momentos importantes desse processo, como o da refração à memória sobre o evento, o de sua apropriação política pelo projeto republicano, sua reabilitação pela memória histórica e sua ritualização pelo tradicionalismo gaúcho, propõe-se reconstituir analiticamente a fixação do fato como patrimônio simbólico coeso e múltiplo, suficientemente elástico para pautar conflitos internos e tensões entre o estado e o centro do Brasil.

The aim of this paper is to present a panorama of manifestations related to the Farroupilha Revolution, from the event itself to its consolidation as the founding myth of regional identity in Rio Grande do Sul. Debating important moments in this process, such as the refraction of memory in relation to the event, its political appropriation by the republican project, its rehabilitation in historical memory, and its ritualization in Gaúcho traditionalism, it is proposed to analytically reconstitute the establishment of the fact as a symbolically cohesive and multiple heritage, sufficiently elastic to guide internal conflicts and tensions between the state and the center of Brazil.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar as celebrações do Primeiro de Maio ao longo do Estado Novo varguista. Pretende-se identificar mudanças e permanências em seus rituais comemorativos, bem como as estratégias de preparação, apresentação e legitimação de suas comemorações por parte do governo.

The aim of this article is to analyze the celebrations of 1 May during Vargas' Estado Novo. It is intended to identify changes and permanencies in these commemorative rituals, as well as the strategies of preparation, presentation and legitimation of these commemorations by the government.

A instituição dos grupos escolares no início do século XX em Sergipe representou considerável transformação na organização do ensino escolar público. Neste artigo buscou-se compreender o funcionamento cotidiano de tais instituições por meio da identificação e análise dos diferentes eventos de caráter escolar e cívico ocorridos nos grupos. Com base em pesquisa bibliográfica e documental desenvolvida sob perspectiva histórica, percebeu-se que as diferentes cerimônias presentes nos grupos, além de momentos de legitimação da escola primária perante a sociedade convertiam-se em momentos de celebração do civismo em razão da propaganda das autoridades constituídas e da difusão do ideal de nação civilizada.

The institution of grupos escolares (elementary schools) at the beginning of the twentieth century in Sergipe represented a considerable transformation of the organization of public teaching. In this article it is sought to understand the daily functioning of these institutions through the identification and analysis of different school and civic events that occurred in the grupos. Based on bibliographic and documentary research carried out from a historic perspective, it can be seen that the different ceremonies present in those schools, as well as moments of the legitimation of primary school in society, were converted into moments of the celebration of civism due to the propaganda of the constituted authorities and the diffusion of the ideal of the civilized nation.

O artigo aborda aspectos relevantes dos discursos de celebração da 'Revolução de 64', construídos pelos militares entre os anos de 1964 e 1999, através dos quais buscaram explicitar as motivações quanto à articulação do Golpe de Estado, a estruturação do regime e o seu desfecho em 1985. As matrizes discursivas assumem contornos de radicalidade ao justificarem o 31 de março em oposição à 'Revolução Comunista' que estava em curso no governo João Goulart. O material pesquisado representa um significativo 'lugar de memória', permitindo aos militares a formulação de hipóteses que pretendem, ainda hoje, legitimar uma memória positiva dos feitos 'revolucionários'. O objetivo, portanto, é analisar as concepções de história, o sentido e o caráter das comemorações, estabelecendo regularidades que possam elucidar a estruturação do pensamento anticomunista e autoritário em disputa no campo da memória por uma determinada apropriação do passado.

The article discusses relevant aspects of the commemoration speeches of the '1964 Revolution,' made by the Brazilian military between 1964 and 1999. During these years, they sought to explain the reasons for the the coup d'état, the structuring of the subsequent regime and its ending in 1985. The discursive matrixes assume contours of radicalism to justify the 31 March revolution in opposition to the 'Communist revolution' which was being carried out by the João Goulart government. The research material represents a significant 'place of memory,' leading the army to formulate hypotheses that nowadays still intend to legitimize a positive memory of the 'revolutionary' deeds. The aim of this study is, thus, to analyze concepts of history, and the meaning and the character of the commemorations, establishing regularities that might elucidate the structure of the authoritarian and anti-communist thought disputed in the field of memory for a specific appropriation of the past.

O artigo analisa a história da historiografia brasileira, segundo a perspectiva de José Honório Rodrigues (1913-1987), como parte dos esforços que na década de 1930 começaram a investir nos aspectos profissionais da História como disciplina no Brasil - enfatizando, por exemplo, a função central da metodologia histórica como diferencial frente às escritas amadoras. Uma das principais contribuições de Rodrigues consistiu na organização e periodização de uma história para a pesquisa histórica brasileira. Ao construir essa narrativa histórica, ele organizou um passado, mas também indicou um futuro possível para aquilo que idealizava como um campo profissionalizado. Seu projeto de um Instituto de Pesquisa Histórica, que asseguraria a formação teórica e metodológica adequada aos jovens historiadores brasileiros, faria a escrita histórica se afastar das visões mais conservadoras e tradicionalistas e desvendar os verdadeiros caminhos para uma revolução no processo histórico nacional.

This article analyzes the history of Brazilian historiography, according to the perspective of José Honório Rodrigues (1913-1987), as part of the efforts which began to be made in the 1930s to invest in professional aspects of History as a discipline in Brazil - emphasizing, for instance, the central function of historical methodology as an advantage over amateur writings. One of the main contributions of Rodrigues consisted of the organization and periodization of a history for Brazilian historical research. When composing this historical narrative, he not only organized a past, but also indicated a possible future for what he idealized as a professional field. His project of a Historical Research Institute, which would guarantee adequate theoretical and methodological training to the young Brazilian historians, would make history writing depart from more conservative and traditionalist views in order to uncover the true paths of a revolution in the national historical process.

O artigo resulta de pesquisa desenvolvida sobre a contribuição dos conteúdos latino-americanos na grade curricular de ensino para a formação histórica dos jovens na escola. A pesquisa consistiu na análise das narrativas históricas produzidas pelos 67 alunos que frequentaram a disciplina de Estudos Latino-americanos (ELA) da 7ª série do Colégio de Aplicação (CA) da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) em 2009. O objetivo era investigar a influência dessa disciplina na construção de saberes históricos sobre a América Latina e que relações ela estabelece com a formação da consciência histórica dos jovens.

This article arose out of research on the contribution of Latin American contents to the history curriculum of young people in school. The research consisted of the analysis of historical narratives produced by 67 students who took the discipline Latin American Studies (ELA) in the seventh grade of the Aplicação School (CA) attached to the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in 2009. The objective was to investigate what the influence of this discipline was in the construction of historical knowledge about Latin America and what relations it established with the formation of young people's historical consciousness.

O artigo examina a participação gaúcha no autodenominado Movimento Folclórico Brasileiro, entre as décadas de 1940 e 1960. Os participantes locais são divididos em duas categorias de folcloristas: os folcloristas do tradicionalismo e o grupo de intelectuais e artistas da Comissão Estadual de Folclore (CEF), representante oficial da Comissão Nacional de Folclore (CNFL) no Rio Grande do Sul. A assimetria dos dois grupos - desiguais em autoridade e posição social - nas esferas regional e nacional de reconhecimento mútuo é a base sobre a qual os atores conceberão distintamente a própria ancestralidade, sua atividade profissional e a finalidade social dos estudos de Folclore.

This article examines the participation of Gauchos in the self-named Brazilian Folkloric Movement (Movimento Folclórico Brasileiro) between the 1940s and 1960s. Local participants are divided into two categories of folklorists: traditional folklorists and the group of intellectuals and artists from the State Folklore Commission (Comissão Estadual de Folclore - CEF), official representative of the National Folklore Commission (Comissão Nacional de Folclore - CNFL) in Rio Grande do Sul. Unequal in authority and social position, the asymmetry of the two groups in the regional and national spheres of mutual recognition is the basis on which the authors distinctly see their ancestrality, professional activities, and the social purpose of folklore studies.

O artigo aborda a produção cultural da televisão brasileira, em especial da Rede Globo de Televisão e de seu telejornalístico Globo Repórter no desaguar da chamada 'abertura política', tendo como mote a veiculação da imagem política de Tancredo de Almeida Neves e os processos de construção simbólica que envolveram a sua mitificação. Num contexto marcado pelo 'transformismo político', a pesquisa enfoca a centralidade da mídia eletrônica como elo de contato entre a sociedade civil e a sociedade política e como privilegiado 'lugar de memória' da cultura nacional, ajudando a urdir sentidos em torno de imagens políticas e de certa concepção de história.

This paper discusses the cultural production of Brazilian television focusing in particular on Globo Network, a television network, and one of its programs called Globo Repórter, a weekly documentary show, concentrating on the rise of so-called 'political opening,' adopting as a guide the diffusion of the political image of Tancredo de Almeida Neves, as well as symbolic construction processes which involved his mythification. Against a context of 'political transformation,' this research focuses on the centrality of electronic media as a link between civil and political society and as a crucial 'place of memory' of national culture, helping to make sense of political images and a certain conception of history.

O artigo analisa a relação entre cinema e história considerando esse suporte como um 'lugar de memória'. Para isso, analisa-se o filme A Espiral (1975), dirigido por Chris Marker e Armand Mattelart, um documentário montado com materiais pesquisados em arquivos que se dedica a analisar a Unidade Popular no Chile. Após o golpe de Estado de 1973, seus realizadores pretenderam construir um conhecimento histórico que combatia a visão de que a ditadura 'normalizava' o caos instaurado no país, denunciando que o governo de Salvador Allende havia sido vítima de um grande boicote organizado pela direita. Nesse sentido, a montagem organiza um dossiê com base em 'provas' encontradas em arquivos.

This article examines the relationship between cinema and history, considering this support as a 'place of memory.' In the article the film A Espiral (1975), directed by Chris Marker and Armand Mattelart is analyzed. It is a documentary made with materials researched in archives and concerned with analyzing the Unidade Popular party in Chile. After the 1973 coup its makers intended to construct historical knowledge which could combat the vision that the dictatorship had 'normalized' the chaos in the country, denouncing that Salvador Allende's government had been the victim of a great boycott organized by the right. In this sense the production organizes a dossier based on the 'proof' found in archives.

O fortalecimento do Estado Imperial brasileiro já foi explicado de diversas maneiras. Entretanto, embora o contexto da primeira metade do século XIX tenha sido marcado pela eclosão de inúmeras revoltas armadas, quase não existem análises relacionando a política da Corte e das províncias com a ação e o significativo crescimento e atuação do Exército Imperial brasileiro. Esse é justamente o objetivo deste trabalho, em que será analisada a capacidade das autoridades em recrutar efetivos militares necessários naquele contexto de intensa mobilização militar, relacionando isso com o fortalecimento da autoridade imperial. Conclui-se que as diferentes realidades provinciais influíram decisivamente no processo de extração de recrutas e no maior ou menor fortalecimento do poder imperial nas realidades locais.

The strengthening of the Brazilian Imperial state has been explained in various manners. Nevertheless, although the context of the first half of the nineteenth century was marked by the outbreak of numerous armed revolts, there are almost no analyses relating the policy of the Court and the provinces to the significant growth in the operation of the Brazilian Imperial army. This is precisely the objective of this paper, which will analyze the capacity of the authorities to recruit the necessary military forces in that context of intense military mobilization, relating this to the strengthening of imperial authority. It is concluded that the different provincial realities decisively influenced the process of obtaining recruits and the greater or lesser strengthening of imperial power in local realities.

O artigo analisa do ponto de vista da cartografia comparada alguns mapas da região amazônica, de meados do século XVIII, tendo como eixo a Carte de l'Amérique Méridionale, de 1748, de autoria de Bourguignon D'Anville, cartógrafo francês que trabalhou com o embaixador português dom Luís da Cunha, visando a produção de um mapa que servisse de base para as negociações do Tratado de Madri. O documento é cotejado com um mapa atual, com o mapa resultante da expedição de La Condamine (1744, desenhado por D'Anville), e com o chamado Mapa das Cortes (Lisboa, 1749), produzido sob os auspícios de Alexandre de Gusmão, o documento efetivamente utilizado para subsidiar as negociações desse Tratado de 1750 que efetuou a partilha da América setentrional. Conjuga-se uma análise da política diplomática europeia com um rastreamento das fontes cartográficas, confirmado pela cartografia digital.

This paper analyses, from the point of view of compared cartography, some maps of the Amazon region from the mid-eighteenth century, having as central axis the Carte de l'Amérique Meridionale produced in 1748 by Bourguignon D'Anville, a French cartographer who has worked closely with the Portuguese ambassador Don Luis da Cunha, in order to produce a map that would serve as a basis for the ongoing negotiations of the Madrid's Treaty. In addition to collate it with a current map, to observe concordances and dissonances, two other comparisons are made: one with the resulting map of La Condamine's expedition, drawn by D'Anville (1744), and the other with the so-called Mapa das Cortes, produced in Lisbon under the auspices of Alexandre de Gusmão, which was the map effectively used to support the negotiations of this Treaty of 1750 that made the division of South America. This methodology combines an European diplomatic policy analysis with the tracing of cartographic sources that, in turn, is confirmed by the digital cartography, involving studies of map accuracy and statistical analyses. This combination of methods proved to be a powerful tool for the analysis of cartographic production, understood in its broadest sense and opens new frontiers of work and research.
