RESUMO Este estudo propõe compreender, por meio de uma abordagem que combina produção historiográfica com análise de fontes primárias, alguns fatores subjacentes ao envio de vacinas brasileiras contra a febre amarela para Portugal e seus territórios ultramarinos nas últimas décadas do colonialismo português na África. A imunização contra a febre amarela era fundamental para proteger os colonos que partiam para o continente africano, mas a vacina não era produzida em laboratórios portugueses. Nas décadas de 1960-1970, a mobilização de efetivos militares contra os movimentos independentistas nas colônias e a eclosão de surtos da doença na Guiné e em Angola intensificaram a demanda pelo imunizante. Este artigo defende que o envio da vacina brasileira para Portugal não apenas respondeu à demanda portuguesa em suas colônias, mas também foi instrumentalizado a fim de obter contrapartidas favoráveis ao Brasil na África, especialmente em Angola.

ABSTRACT This study aims to understand, through an approach that combines historiographical production with analysis of primary sources, some of the underlying factors behind the shipment of Brazilian yellow fever vaccines to Portugal and its overseas territories in the final decades of Portuguese colonialism in Africa. Immunization against yellow fever was essential to protect settlers leaving for the African continent, but the vaccine was not produced in Portuguese laboratories. In the 1960s and 1970s, the mobilization of military forces against independence movements in the colonies and the outbreak of the disease in Guinea and Angola intensified the demand for the vaccine. This article argues that sending the Brazilian vaccine to Portugal not only responded to Portuguese demand in its colonies but was also instrumental in obtaining favourable concessions for Brazil in Africa, especially in Angola.

RESUMO Em São Paulo, foi criado, por um grupo de exilados portugueses, Portugal Democrático, editado entre 1956 e 1977. O jornal, como lugar de resistência à ditadura de Salazar e Caetano, constituiu-se como movimento político, enquanto projeto de convergência e materialização de uma “estratégia unitária” para agir contra o Estado Novo português. Analisaremos a centralidade dada por aquele periódico às iniciativas do catolicismo de vanguarda, interpretando as razões de tamanho espaço político atribuído às questões relativas aos católicos e à Igreja Católica naquele jornal de oposição ao poder instituído em Portugal antes da revolução de 25 de Abril de 1974. Por meio de uma análise qualitativa do conteúdo do Portugal Democrático ficará patente como aquela folha, dado o seu projeto político, se coloca para a História Contemporânea, de forma singular, como um dos mais destacados casos de construção de uma plataforma “unitária”.

ABSTRACT In São Paulo, a group of Portuguese exiles created Portugal Democrático, published between 1956 and 1977. The newspaper, as a place of resistance to the dictatorship of Salazar and Caetano, constituted itself as a political movement, as a project of convergence and materialization of a “unitary strategy” to act against the Portuguese Estado Novo. We will analyze the centrality given by that newspaper to the initiatives of avant-garde Catholicism, interpreting the reasons for the significant political space attributed to issues related to Catholics and the Catholic Church in that newspaper, opposed to the established power in Portugal before the revolution of April 25, 1974. Through a qualitative analysis of the contents of Portugal Democrático, it will become clear how that newspaper, considering its political project, stands out in contemporary history as one of the most notable cases of the construction of a “unitary” platform.
