Evangelization and education by International Mission Board from Brazilian Baptist Convention in the ‘northern Goiás’: Beatriz Rodrigues da Silva case (1935-1939)

Abstract:

This article discusses the strategies of the International Mission Board from Brazilian Baptist Convention directed specially to education and conversion of Indian communities and local people in the 1930s, in the region so called northern Goiás, located on the present-day state of Tocantins. The text brings subsidies to understand the specific role of missionary women in the process of Brazilian Protestantism expansion, exploring the trajectory of the teacher Beatriz Rodrigues da Silva, comprehending how developed her educational and evangelical activity with highlight between the pioneer missions in the region. Through the Cultural History, the article reviews the success of the Baptist educational venture on the region, understanding how it became consolidated in the context analyzed.
