The notion of aesthetic education in the curriculum of elementary schools in the State of Paraná - early 20th century: spirit growth discipline or sensitivity education

Abstract:

This paper analyzes the mobilization of the notion of aesthetic education in the educational debate related to the proposals for elementary schools in the State of Paraná, throughout the first three decades of the twentieth century. From the perspective of the history of the curriculum, it seeks to capture the proposals and initiatives that pursued the schooling of this educational dimension by questioning the appearance and transformation of curricular forms and rhetoric, relating to their educational purposes. It explores a set of sources that includes literature and pedagogical press, normative texts and curricular prescriptions, as well as reports written by normalist teachers and students. It concludes that the meanings that prevailed in the curriculum around this notion are linked to the schooling of singing and music, to the detriment of other formative potentialities then available.
