Ideação e avaliatividade em relatos de aprendizes de inglês como língua estrangeira

This paper presents the first results of a linguistic and discursive framework for the analysis of narratives of Learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language as part of the AMFALE Project (Learning with Memories of Learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language) from the College of Letters at UFMG. Drawing primarily on Martin and Rose's (2003) framework of discourse analysis, the paper's main objective is to discuss the genre features of the narratives under investigation according to the model of genre analysis developed by Eggins and Martin (1997), in order to fully understand how learners of English as a Foreign Language express the complexities of their learning experiences through the linguistic and discursive choices they make. Given that storytelling, more than any other family of genres, makes visible their storytellers' feelings, needs and wishes (Martin; Rose, 2003), as well as taking into account that narratives are textual representations of specific events experienced by their storytellers (Riessman, 1993), in this work I focus particularly on some textual elements which signal the complexities of learning English as a Foreign Language. The corpus is comprised of thirty seven transcripts of audio narratives of learners of English available at AMFALE project homepage. The analysis includes the description of some elements of ideation (transitivity) and appraisal that commonly occur in the narratives, according to Martin and Rose's (2003) analytical model. The results indicate the strong presence of material, mental and relational processes, which respectively play the role of activity, appraisal and identifying descriptors. Lastly, the data also point to the construction of narrative genres by means of specific stages that characterize the genre itself.
