Analyses of 126 facial fractures in children under 12 years old

Fractures of facial skeleton in children are uncommon and the prevention is the best measure to combat it, until now. Therefore, this study has the objective of characterise the epidemiologic profile of the facial fractures in children in our environment and show the bone most account. We analyses the results of 126 facial fractures in 98 children who were admited to the "HC-FMUSP" between January 1990 and July 1996. The major cause of facial fractures was falls and in this group 85% occurred from over the home. Mandibular fractures occurred most frequently (29%), following by nasal fractures (24%0. In regard to the mandibular fractures, the body had been showed most injuries (31 % ) following by the condyle (27%). Associated injuries happened in 24% of the victims and the most frequently was the neurocraniun injury. Domestic accidents are the main cause of facial fractures in children in our environment, therefore simple preventive care can be taken to decrease the number of these accidents.
