Effect of varying volumes of commercial substrates, soil and organic compost on yellow passion fruit seedling growth in different cultivation conditions

This study aimed to evaluate the growth of passion fruit seedlings in three different sizes of containers, under three conditions for protected cultivation, using six different substrates. Three environments of cultivation were used: (A1) greenhouse in arch, covered with polyethylene film of 150μm, zenith opening and reflector thermal screen under film, with 50 % of shading; (A2) nursery with monofilament screen, with 50 % of shading, and (A3) nursery with reflector thermal screen, with 50% of shading. Three polyethylene bags were tested (V1 = xx cm33, 7.5 cm x 11.5 cm, V2 = xx cm33,10.0 cm x 16.5 cm and V3 = xx cm33, 15.0 cm x 21.5 cm), and filled with six substrates (S1 = soil, S2 = Plantmax ®; S3 = vermiculite, S4 = coconut fiber; S5 = chips coconut fiber and S6 = commercial organic compound). The experimental design was a completely randomized in sub-sub-plot scheme, where the environments were plots, the containers were subplots and substrates were sub-subplots. At 50 days after sowing was measured plant height, root length, aerial and root dry mass. From the dry mass was determined the ratio of aerial and dry mass and total mass. The greenhouse was the best environment when used with the bag 15.0 x 21.5 cm, which promoted plants bigger, with aerial, root and total dry biomass higher. The vermiculite was the best substrate, but fertilized soil is a less expensive alternative for the region.
